Does anyone have both the "old" steel H009* or H010 with the XS ghost ring sights and the newer model with the semi-buckhorn rear sight? If so, do you have a preference for one?

*The steel receiver .30-30 is actually in its third iteration. The first one was bigger and heavier. It had a front barrel band and a semi-buckhorn rear sight. The second version, the one I have, is trimmer. It has a friend cap instead of the barrel band, and has the XS sights.

Recently, in response to issues some .45-70 owners were having, Henry modified both the .30-30 and .45-70 models to strengthen the clasp on the magazine tube. The newest models now have brass bead front sights, and rear semi-buckhorns.

the newest model is the one we have .... the buckhorn sight looks pretty good to me but my open sights days are pretty much history .... earlier today we mounted a scope on our 45-70 and we are looking forward to running some rounds through it

Too bad they couldn't have fixed the magazine tube issue and kept the ghost ring site.

My 2 cents: For older eyes the forward position on the buckhorn sight would be best. I have an 94 winchester with the same style buck horn setup and even with my old eyes I can still shoot it well. It's hard to take advantage of a longer sight radius when the rear sight is not a ghost but in fact is a bunch of ghosts.

My .45-70 had the XS Ghost Ring sight and the barrel band front sight. I liked the XS Ghost Ring sight fine but my magazine tube would not stand the recoil. My magazine tube was replaced twice but each tube had the same issues. Henry contacted me and had my rifle sent back for an upgrade. Yes, I lost the XS Ghost Ring sight but I now have a very solid rifle. I'm not a fan of the buckhorn sight, so I replaced it with a Skinner peep sight. I also put a Skinner peep sight on my Big Boy .44.
