My local gun shop has a big boy in 45 colt that I'm really thinking about picking up. The only problem I have is the twist rate. In an email Henry told me the 45 colt was 1-16" twist which is what I want. Problem is Henry's website shows both the 45 colt and 44 magnum are 1-38" twist.

Would someone care to check the twist rate on their 45 colt big boy just to confirm the twist rate for me.

we do not own a Henry 45 Colt but we do have a Henry Big Boy Steel 44 Mag and 357 .... we also have a Color Case Hardened 45-70 .... all three are very accurate .... we have members of this forum that do own and regularly shoot a 45 Colt .... one good thread can be found at this link --- http://henryrifleforums.com/viewtopic.php?f=42&t=1593 ---

I own one and have no idea how to help you. But I can tell you that when I hold the big end against my shoulder and point the little end down range, a big smile always follows the boom. Sorry, but there's lots of folks on here who can help you. Welcome to the forum.

Pretty easy to do. Take a cleaning rod with a patch tight enough to make the rod rotate as it goes down the bore. Mark the cleaning rod up by the handle with a magic marker or whatever so you can watch and count the number of complete turns the rod makes as it runs down the bore. Divide your barrel length by the number of turns the rod makes and you get a useable twist rate number. May not be super exact, but, for sure, you'll know it will be one or the other of these. Huge difference between a 1-38 and 1-16.

Yes this will be my first Henry. I'm a lever gun fanatic. I have several Marlins, but really want to start buying Henry's due to how well the customer service is and being American made.

You've got your two reason absolutely right for buying a Henry: "Made in the USA," and CS that is excellent.

That's true. HRA customer service would answer your question right away.

Don't know if it helps, but ran a dry patch on a jag down my .357 Big Boy steel. It turned a little over a half a turn in a 20" barrel. I noticed a couple reviews of the Big Boys list a 1:38 twist.

I will pile on with the rest and say that my BB steel has to be my favorite weapon in the stable. And I'm a pistol guy.

It is probably Clovispup's favorite as well. She has commented many times what a good decision I made to get the Big Boy.

based on what I've been able to find the 44 Mag and 45 Colt Henry Big Boy steel are built with a 1:38 twist and the 357 has a 1:16 twist .... information taken from this link ===> http://www.cabelas.com/product/HENRY-BI ... 969838.uts .... to confirm one way or the other I agree with the recommendation to call Henry customer service .... we've fired 180 and 240 grain lead and jacketed bullets through ours and they all perform well .... until reading this thread I'd not given any consideration to barrel twist and base on lots of rounds down range, really don't much care ..... she hits what I aim at and that's really all that's important to me ..

Tried to check mine, and my best guess would be the 1-38..

Not sure what you're looking for, but the 45 Colt Big Boy is an awesome rifle. Hard hitting and accurate.

I have the Big Boy Steel Carbine in 45 Colt. It's currently my primary deer rifle. It shoots nasty little clover leafs at 30 yards with the following 2 loads.

Beartooth Bullets- 280 gr. WFN GC with 13.0 grs of HS6 CCI350 primer
Hornady XTP - 250 gr. JHP with 13.0 grs of HS6 CCI350 primer

Thanks for all the help. I'll stay away from it till they put a faster twist barrel on them. I have a 1-38" twist 44 magnum that shoots great with really light bullets. Even shoots good with heavier bullets at 50 yds and less. Problem is at 100 yds bullets start hitting the target sideways.
