I have a new 6.5 Creedmoor Long Ranger that misfires. I originally thought it might be the ammo but I have had the same issue with winchester, hornady, and norma. Some of the misfired cartridges will show an indention in the center from the firing pin but some showed no mark at all. The bolt seems to have some play in it. With the lever up and hammer back, the bolt is not tight. I can push it in about 1/16 of an inch and it will spring back. If I slowly release the hammer, it seems like it has to overcome this give in the bolt before the firing pin can hit the cartridge.

I have contacted Henry to set up a return for repairs. I am curious to know if anyone else that owns a Long Ranger has that kind of play in their bolt? Or, when the lever is us and hammer is back, the bolt is securely locked in place without any give?

My Ranger in 223 has a bolt that doesn’t move when locked into battery.

My Ranger bolt will lock up if there is any swelling in the .223/5.56 cartridge shoulder. The bolt won't go into full battery, protruding about 1/16" at the back of the receiver. The lever won't move the bolt further forward into full battery nor retract. Sometimes I can use both thumbs to push the bolt fully into battery, sometimes I have to use a small rubber mallet. After that the lever can retract the bolt and eject the round. I think the way the gearing in the Long Ranger works, it can't retract the bolt until it has gone into full battery. Hence I check every cartridge when loading a magazine. Sometimes I miss the swelling in the cartridge shoulder as it is often barely noticeable.

Sad reviews for a rifle that cost that blame much.

Thank you. I am thinking that is the problem. There shouldn't be any movement when locked.

Henry has received the rifle and I am now in the que for it to be fixed. I wanted to share a couple of pics so you could see what I was talking about with the slack in the bolt. I'd like to know what anyone thinks about it or what the problem might be.

It looks like it’s not locking into battery fully.

My bolt would jam with the bolt sticking out like in your picture on the left. No slack in the bolt. Just stuck in that position, would not move. The Henry repair ticket said they adjusted the bolt lock up. I assume that means they loosened the lockup. Maybe your lockup is too loose or maybe there is a tooth missing in the lever gearing.

The internal workings of long ranger looks very complicated with a lot of small gears that could become chipped or out of tune. Thanks for the pic Mags.

You did the right thing by sending back to H.R.A. I would not want a rifle that would fire when the bolt was not fully locked as the shooter's face is right behind it.

I got the gun back from Henry. The fix was to adjust the lock up and replace the firing pin. I consider myself just an average shooter. It took me a little bit to get dialed in to shooting the gun. This was my last two 3 shot rounds. Shoots like a champ...
