I cant get this gun to shoot consistent.
Factory and reloads. 300 gr to 405.
Scoped 3x9
Bench.
Is is possible that barrel over heats .
I'd be happy with hitting a pie plate at 50yards every shot.
For instance last 4 shots I took. 2 went in center. Then 3d flew about 8 inches high and 4th about 8 inches low.
Anyone recommend a bullet?
I have a 3030 and 243 single shot and they are tack drivers .

with the recoil of a 45-70 firing hunting level loads, the first thing I'd check would be the scope and its mounts .... I had to use purple Loctite to keep ours from working loose .... also, with hunting level loads, the barrel will most certainly heat up when fired fairly rapidly

Does it shoot that way with iron sights? Maybe the scope itself is bad or the reticle is loose. Id take the scope off and give that a try if the mounts and rings are tight. If it shoots that way with iron sights then I would be on the phone to Henry.

As above, I'd suspect a scope/mount issue. Al's idea to check by shooting iron sights is a great idea.

Just purchased a Henry H010 45/70
Took it to the range and at 25 yards it was hitting a foot to the left. So if not scope or ammo could have been a bad barrel. If you can't figure it out give Henry a call. I did send mine to them and they sent me a replacement rifle that is dead on.

North Country Gal, good to see post from you. I have not seen one from you in other forums for a while.

I have the same rifle, it is very accurate. I'd do as others suggested, try it with irons, if no better, call Henry.

I will try with iron sights for sure.
This is the second scope and it's actually a muzzloader scope.
Just aggravates the fire out of me .

Really aggravating to have something like that happen. The first ammo I shot in mine was factory, Federal Fusion 300 gr. JHP.
Hits were all over the place. Tried my handloads, nailed it.
Federal rounds looked like buckshot.

Don't mind at all, be glad too.
One of the things we do well here.
I use Hornady 300 gr. JHP, over IMR 4198 41 grs. CCI 200 Large rifle primer, Starline new brass. I can't guarantee that'll
work the same in your rifle, but worth giving it a try. Different guns like different things. I got lucky, I guess on mine.
Later, when I have time ( too close to deer season now ), I'll experiment with slightly different loads, see if that improves, or goes the other way, LOL.

I use the same bullet over 45.0 grains of H4198. It is not the same as IMR4198, but close. I have good groups at 50 yards. Where I live, I rarely shoot distances greater than 60 or 70 yards. I use iron sights (Skinner rear peep sight).

Know what you mean. I hunt in brush too, hard to get a 50 yd shot. I use a scope, my old eyes don't like open sights.

3 groups at 25 yards off sand bags. Iron sights.
Group 1 300 gr hp
Group 2 250 monoplex (moved sight wrong way)
Group 3 250 monoplex.
I know I need to shoot 50 yards but not sure I how good with iron sights.

that group isn't bad at all and as you become better acquainted with your 30-30 it will get even better

Here's a target I shot today with the H010 45/70.
10 shots at 50 yds.

that would put meat in the cooler ..
