+P rounds in Henry 357 & 44 mag

Has anyone been using 38spl +P or 44Mag +P rounds in Henry rifles ??
If so, any problems and any impressions. Like or dislike ??
Does anyone reload +P rounds also ?

I see no need to go to +P. If you need more punch, just go to the magnum version.

If the rifle will handle .357 magnum or 44 magnum rounds, it should have no problem with +P of the special variety. Still, these rounds tend to be more expensive than their magnum brothers.

As far as reloads, I load all my loads for my .357 Big Boy in magnum cases and loads. I don't get the crud ring in the chamber, and I normally get very good accuracy from the magnum loads. I usually load somewhere in the middle of load data and avoid max loads.

Velocities from pistol caliber rifles are often much higher than listed muzzle velocity on the packages. As an example, American Eagle 158 grain SP in .357 lists 1240 on the box for MV. My real world chrony data from a 20" barrel showed 1800 fps. Not all loads are going to get that big a bump. It depends on the powder type being used. Still, most loads will get at least a couple hundred fps boost over pistol length barrels.

that is pretty much our plan for our Grandson's 357 Henry that we are giving him for his birthday .... all cases will be 357's ... our practice load will be somewhere in the 38 special range .... hunting rounds will be heavy 357's

But, I load between the starting charge and the middle charge of published pistol data.

I only shoot magnum rounds in my Henry .38/.357 and the .44/.44mag rifles. I do, however, load +P rounds that I shoot in my Ruger Super Blackhawk .44/.44mag. They are more tolerable for me in that handgun and I can shoot it more accurately. If deer hunting with the handgun, I still use full magnum loads. In Illinois you are required to use factory ammo for hunting deer with a handgun - no reloads allowed. You also have to use an expanding bullet, so hard cast lead bullets would not be legal.

Sorry for side-tracking your thread, DWD. I'd like to make a comment or two about our MO deer hunting regs. Nothing bad, maybe even a little humorous....

I think all our states, JEBar, have some type of restrictions, which can be unusual -- to say the least. Each year I read the "Wildlife Code of Missouri" because it covers every kind of hunting method and animal that is allowed to be harvested....the details are tremendous, and too often they change from year-to-year!! One that is interesting to me is the general "Sunrise and Sunset" chart posted in each year's Fall Deer & Turkey Hunting Regulations. Hunting is permitted during daylight hours only, which makes good sense. Nothing wrong with this regulation. The tables list the rise & set of the sun for each day from Sept 1st through Jan 31st. But the specificity and detail in the explanation on how to determine sunrise & sunset is almost off the chart! Indulge me as I copy this brief regulation paragraph:

Jefferson City -- Central Standard Time
These tables are for Jefferson City and points on the same longitude north and south. For locations east, subtract one minute for each 13.5 miles of airline distance. For locations west, add one minute for each 13.5 miles. For example, St. Louis is 106 miles east: subtract 8 minutes; Kansas City (my hunting region) is 133 miles west: add 10 minutes.

So if a person mis-calculates sunrise, gets rambunctious, and harvests a deer too early in the day and, as required, reports it promptly to the State, it's an "uh-oh." And there are game wardens out and about throughout the state, especially during deer hunting.

Anyway, I think there is some humor here at times.
And what happens if the person's watch is way off? Got to keep an eye on those early morning deer hunters!

per Henry, a Mare's Leg 44 would weigh a little over 2 lbs more than our Redhawk .... I'd really be interested to see the difference in recoil

I have the Talo SBH 3 3/4" barrel that pairs up with my mares leg. Recoil with the mares leg is little compared to the SBH but even in the revolver recoil is not bad and feels less than what I get from 180gr Remington load.

Just use .357 Mag. All loads safe for handguns are appropriate for the BB. I have yet to find any published loads (I reload) which feel like more than a mousefart in my Henry.
