Are 327 Big Boys cursed ?

Post by needsmostuff » Mon Sep 07, 2020 6:35 pm

Being a devout 327 aficionado a few years ago I grabbed the first Big Boy Steel 327 rifle I could find .
I mean I had no choice.
Upon unboxing I found it had poor wood fit on the buttstock (and mean WORSE than the current at the time Remlin garbage wood fit) and a the worst trigger pull of ANY lever action I ever felt .
O well I had a 327 .
I guessed I could live with the wood fit and the trigger would smooth out with use .
Well the trigger never got better and in fact you could see it pulling the hammer back as you pull the trigger . Number of pounds ? Who knows , off the scale of the pull gauge I borrowed. I dove in , polished a few things but did not change any angles or cut any springs. It got marginally better but still not right.
I decided to whine and sent it in. As a by the way , while it's there thought I mentioned the atrocious wood fit .
When it returned I found they had replaced all the parts I polished with new and the trigger pull was back to square one ,,,,unmeasurable ,,, awful.
The butt stock was replaced with shiny new ,,, but fit just as poorly as the first. I also have a 357 rifle so I swapped buttstocks. The new stock fit the 357 perfectly and the 357 stock was awful on the 327. Seems the receiver is too wide on the 327 ?????

I gave up , repolished the internals and let it go.

Fast forward to finding a 327 carbine recently on a used rifle rack ,,,,and O Boy I wanted a carbine.
Guess what SAME CRAPPY TRIGGER, SAME CRAPPY WOODFIT in the same place.
I bought it anyway cuz ,,,,, O Boy I want a carbine.
On the rack next to it was a 44 big boy and a 357 big boy ,,,,, both just right. Smooth and well fit.

Long story short ,,, You guys that have 327s are you seeing the same thing ? Is this a 327 thing ,,, or am I just lucky ?

I don't have one, but I have a couple of friends that are Big into the 32's.
I believe one of them may have one, I'll message him later and see.

Was right, Amos has one and said "He worked on the trigger" ;)
Didn't really say about the WTM finish though.

Why don't you send that photo to the "Big Boss" at H.R.A. and ask him if this is the type of fit and finish that his company usually puts out.

I've had my hands on 2 BBS 327's .... their fit and finish was pretty much on par with our other caliber Henry rifles

I'll chime in here. I got my .327 and the head space was off. New cartridges were breaking off inside the case. The barrel was very accurate though. I hated sending it back but did because I spent quite a bit of money paying a smith to get the trigger pull reasonable. Henry replaced the barrel and most of the innards so my money went out the window. The second barrel is not as accurate as the first but okay. They did replace the stock as they claimed it had a hairline crack in it. I never noticed it so it must have happened when it was being worked on or during shipping. I think I've shot it twice since I got it back and always contemplating on trading it in. I haven't done so yet. The stock does seem to fit quite well though.

It just doesn't happen with the .327's. I have a .357 BBS that had the same problems of poor wood fit and finish with a 7.5lb creepy trigger. Took care of the stock fix and trigger myself. The two barrels I have had on it were both bad and had to send the rifle back to Henry. Now I have been waiting for 6 weeks to get it back with its third barrel.

I would think that 6 weeks is a little much even considering the so called pandemic. I wonder what is going on with H.R.A. Maybe they have hired some of the seeing eye dogs that worked for remlin. ( it's spelled with a small m on purpose) Waiting for a rifle to get it's third barrel? It seems like that not too long ago you would have been sent a new rifle.

Again 6 week wait? Have you tried sending an email to Anthony?

I'd bet that with the single action recall, their repair folks are pretty dang busy
