I checked my home propane usage and I’ve used 20% of one tank or 200 gallons since September 25th. At $1.17 a gallon that is about $235. Basically that’s $78 a month. Of course most of that was fall and not winter and the winter time is more like fall.

Comparing the $1.17 to the neighbors paying $2.29 for rented tanks delivered in the winter I’ve already saved $225. I expect usage to go up as it gets colder and will save $800 to $1,000 for a winter by buying. The tanks were $2,700 each and it cost me $1,000 to have three of them delivered and installed on a new concrete pad. So I expect it will take 10 to 12 years for them to pay for themselves.

The RV has used 15% of a 500 gallon tank plus I’m guessing (I didn’t read that tank) all of the onboard 33 gallons. The majority of the consumption was keeping the RV at 40 F. Since I turned it off and only heated it for Packer games the needle hasn’t moved.

Still it’s nice to have a game room and spare bedroom. I don’t have a TV downstairs in the house.

I want to add a Tesla Powerwall powered by solar and wind so I can live off grid. And I want to have enough propane to last me 3-10 years. I can already go 3-4 years.

The propane tanks will be behind a fence so you can’t see them from the road. And if I get a bigger tank for the hill you can’t see it from the road or house.

I’ve used 8% or 80 gallons since January 2nd. I’m guessing most of it was used when it was below zero. Right now it’s 33F.

That’s probably a good rate for a southern state let alone Wisconsin.

The house was built in the 1880’s and remodeled about 15 years ago with spray foam insulation. And it has tight windows. The floor radiant heat makes it feel a lot warmer than it really is. I only heat the first floor. The second floor gets down to 58F when it’s really cold. For the most part I only sleep upstairs.

A friend is temporally living in 30' 5th wheel and when it's really cold she spends more than $81.90 for propane in 2 weeks, she doesn't have a large tank so is paying the current rate of $3.79 a gallon so that makes it quite a bit more than your summer, large quantity rate.

The floor radiant heating uses a propane furnace and is the only source of heat downstairs. Upstairs it’s heated with electric baseboards. I’ve only used them to confirm they work. I have a curtain at the top of the stairs to prevent the heat from rising to the second floor. Now that it’s warmed up and I was upstairs working in the office I opened the curtain and it got up to 66F.

It’s the first of the month and time to read the propane meter. It’s at 43% so I’ve used 370 gallons since September 25th. At $1.17 a gallon that’s $432.90 or $86.58 a month during the winter. It’s been a mild winter so I might not get by that cheap every winter.

I should be able to go a full year on one tank and with three tanks I can go three years.

I’ve used 400 gallons since September 25th. I should be able to go a full year on one tank although I’ll top off in August when the prices are the lowest. My average cost has come down to $78 a month. I suspect it will go even lower as it warms up.

I’m at 35% so I’ve used 450 gallons since my fill-up in late September. My average monthly cost keeps coming dow and is currently at $75 and a few cents.

It’s near the end of the month and time to read my propane usage. I’m now at 33% of a 1,000 gallon tank which holds 800 gallons. This means I’ve used 467 gallons in eight months. I only used 17 gallons this last month for hot water.

My RV didn’t use much at all after I turned the furnace off. This is a 500 gallon tank.

I touched up the camouflage because it was too light. You barely notice the tank at all now.

I use a propane fireplace as a backup heat source if the power goes out in winter. I heat with a ground source heat pimp but glad to have backup cause I have used it once for a week in an ice storm the propane supplier was complaining my 100 gallion tank was too old and I needed newer one. I came across a 250 gallon tank at a farm auction that had 150 gallons of propane in it and got it bought for i think it was $500. Propane supplier moved it to my house hooked up and relit pilot light in my fireplace for about 135 dollars. I'm satisfied it was a good deal considering the 150 gallons of propane in the tank.

I came across a 250 gallon tank at a farm auction that had 150 gallons of propane in it and got it bought for i think it was $500. Propane supplier moved it to my house hooked up and relit pilot light in my fireplace for about 135 dollars. I'm satisfied it was a good deal considering the 150 gallons of propane in the tank.

Other than barbecue tanks they never get too old. Mine are from the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. The fittings should be replaced every 15 to 20 years.

How about painting them lawn green. Of course then they'd stick out when you have snow on the ground.

My dad has a tank, I think it's a 250 gallon tank, horizontal, and it's under the back deck on his house. That is where they put it when he had it installed a couple plus decades ago. He used the propane for a fireplace insert, and a heater downstairs, but he hasn't used either in years. The tank still has propane in it too. He got a call from the company saying that he was going to be charged a fee since he isn't ordering propane, and he still had the original paperwork saying no fee. I think they thought he was buying from another supplier. They said that since it was their tank, he would pay their fee, or they would come get the tank. He said to come and get it. When the crew got there, they wanted no part of trying to move it from where it was. Dad said they even talked about emptying it first, but it was eventually decided that he could leave the tank right there and that he'd call them if he started using it again. I think that once they actually saw the tank, it was clear that there wasn't anyone else servicing it, and that the potential damage to the surroundings outweighed the company's desire to remove it.

In some areas like here the price of tanks are through the roof. I bought from the southern states and had them shipped north. Even with trucking they were a third the cost of buying local. Still I ended up paying right at $10K for three 1,000 and two 500 gallon tanks.
