I live in what used to be a small town, population was around 20k when I was kid in the 60's, now the population is around 120k (actually we're 2 separate cities divided by the Columbia River but it's really just like one city).
When I was a kid there were small mom and pop stores everywhere, there were 4 within walking distance of my house. Now they're almost all gone, we now have 7/11's, many supermarkets, a Walmart and a Costco, also Amazon just opened a "last mile" distribution center.
Lot's of people moving here from the west side of the state, either retired or able to work from home. They can buy a home for a fraction of what it costs over there (Sir Henry can attest to that) although we are catching up, I feel sorry for younger lower income couples, a nice 3 bedroom house is now 500k so not likely they will ever be able to afford to buy one.
I think the known issues are taken care of. If you have any issues or know of another member who is having issues, PM daytime dave. As we head towards the holidays, hunt with your Henry.

Yes, Apple Blossom Festival was completely different back then. Parties everywhere and they would bring in extra LEO's from other towns. I remember Hell's Angels being here but I don't remember them causing any problems as there was such a large LEO presence. I didn't get too involved in the partying as I was a cook at our local A&W in the early 70's and we were crazy busy. At that time there were only around 5 drive-ins in town, no McD's, BK's or Jack's.
Since they made it a 2 weekend event and banned cruising the Ave and brought in enough LEO to enforce the ban it's become pretty tame, the last year of cruising the Ave was crazy, the entire Ave was one big party.
Mostly locals and out of town families now.

Re: Your Hometown Demographics
The way I understand it from long time residents of the area, the little town used to have a grocery, a diner, a town hall, a couple rooming houses, a bed and breakfast and thrived with the oil workers. Then the state government got greedy. They saw all that oil money and thought, "We should tax the oil and gas business MORE. We tax the producers, why not tax those SEARCHING for oil and gas?" So they did, they proposed taxes that would earn money from the companies SEARCHING for oil and gas in the state. Not only did the companies decide it was just as easy to SEARCH in the states that didn't tax them and had plenty of Oil and Gas to find, but they weren't going to reward a state that tried to steal from them. As wells began to fade, rather than milk them, they shut them down.BrokenolMarine wrote: ↑Sun Dec 01, 2024 12:50 pmOkay, so the real town nearest us about 30 minutes away, population 16,000...

Our closest town, which we live about a mile outside of, is an actual ghost town since the oil boom was killed by politicians...

We live outside this small town which has NO businesses, no admin office, the only public buildings are a small limited service post office and a very small metal community meeting building just constructed. Town admin business is conducted once a week, by appointment, at the home of the administrator.
That's a small town.
We are county residents.
Oil workers fled the state like rats from a sinking ship. The little town which was a boom town, died like gold rush towns in the old west when the mines played out.
A year or so after we moved here, the Administration building, which was open for a few hours, a couple days a week, whenever the lady felt like it.... fell in. They condemned it and it's still there, with condemned painted on the front in red paint. Right on the main drag in town, which is three blocks long with nothing but the post office on it.
Yup, quiet little town.
You can tell a lot about the character of a man...
by the way he treats those who can do nothing for him.
I don't look back at the things I can't do anymore with regret, I just look forward to the things I still can.
