Ham radio license

Learning about amateur radio operation. I don't have ANY background so I am starting at ground 0. Enrolled in an online course but that doesn't cover enough basic information to answer my questions so I have ordered a book to fill in some of the blanks. Not sure if I am sharp enough to figure out all the necessary technical information required to put together and operate a system.
Any suggestions?

Have a look here. The actual write-up might not help much, but the bibliography and cross references near the bottom might help.

Signed up on an internet site geared to quickly teach you just what you need to know to pass the exams. The problem I am having is while I may know the answers to enough of the questions to pass, I don't understand enough to be able to effectively use the license. I purchased the ARRL ( American Radio Relay League) manual for the Technical license and I am actually learning the basics of how radio works. It will take me longer to be ready to pass the Technical license and start to prepare for the General class license but I should be able to participate and be comfortably active in the Ham radio community. Don't fall for the "Get your license in a week" pitch. I could get one but I wouldn't know how to use it properly.
I don't have a television. I am skeptical of the internet "News". I am interested in getting information first hand from around the world. Don't plan on going crazy but I am getting my feet wet.

Good luck Ernie. I have my GMRS license, as of yet, I don't need a ham license. I use the GMRS for hunting with another person or group.
