3 Mile Tow

Post by JEBar » Tue Dec 26, 2017 4:35 pm

well, another record outing is in the books .. 8-) .. the record being, the shortest distance from home that we've ever towed to camp .... yep, our family gathered at a one of our son's home (located 3 miles from our place); so, to help with sleeping space, we spent Christmas camped beside the home of one of our sons .... the site was unlevel in every direction, thank goodness for our camper's Bigfoot auto leveling system .... on the positive side, we did have 50 amp and water hookups .... it was cold on Christmas and even colder that night .... none of that mattered, it was a really good Christmas and o hope that was the case for everyone here

The ground sure doesn't look all that uneven but seeing the wheels off the ground sure tells the true story.

Doesn't seem right there isn't about a foot of snow on the ground and ice sickles about a foot long hangin from the awnings

what a terrible thing to say .. :o .. for our area, over on Accuweather, the headline in large bold print reads Snow Event On Wednesday .... go and read the details and you see that there is a 75% probability that there will be little to no accumulation .... now that's the only type of Snow Event we need ... ;)

also, looking at the difference in the length of extension of the levelers lets you know how much the ground dropps in just a few feet

our Sportchassis is a fine truck but it is absolutely useless on anything resembling a slick surface .... too much torque to rear tires coupled with not enough weight .... back in 2010 we towed our camper to the mountains of western NC for Christmas .... went to bed with a cold light rain falling .... got up the next morning to well over a foot of snow ..... we were stranded for about a week

If you want snow and cold, come on up. Minus 23, last night and 8" of snow on the ground. :)

JEBar, that's my idea of a great Christmas, regardless of the weather. Family is what the holidays are all about in my book. Love our north woods, but we're so far away from family and off the beaten path, up here, they can seldom visit.

That is quite the combination. Its what my trailer and car want to be when they grow up.

I was working in the RV industry back in '05 when we had the camper built .... we never said back then that it would be our last but we deliberately had it built to a level where it could be our last, .... I drove to Indiana and picked it up at the factory on Halloween Day .... she's bounced down many, many miles of highways since then .... we bought the Sportchassis in '07 .... we bought it for ride, not for power .... our '02 Chevy 3500 had plenty of power, it literally towed the camper from ocean to ocean .... the stiff ride for the amount of traveling that we do was having an impact on our health .... the Sportchassis has an air suspension and air seats .... when we hit a bump, there isn't a jarring impact on our spines .... we can drive longer distances and get to the destination in a much more rested/relaxed condition .... in addition, 10 years ago if we had of purchased a new 1 ton truck instead of the Sportchassis, we would have most likely had to replace it by now .... we hope to be able to travel for a good number of years to come and believe that we won't need to purchase a new truck or hopefully a new camper

I'm hoping my trailer and car is the last I ever buy for camping.

Another great example of the good use a camper can be put to! Hope everyone had a great Christmas.

we really use and most certainly do enjoy ours .... most years we spend the winters in Texas (we are due to pull out next week) and the summer in South Dakota ... so, it is our residence for well over 6 months each year .... at home we park it in our back yard where it serves as our guest house and emergency shelter .... when the power goes out, we move into the camper, and fire up its generator .... a few times it has served as short term housing for our kids, when they were moving due to job changes

Whenever I see this thread I think of Gilligan's Island....a three hour tour.

Just sit right back
And you'll hear a tale
A tale of a fateful trip,
That started from this tropic port,
Aboard this tiny ship.
The mate was a mighty sailin' lad,
The Skipper brave and sure,
Five passengers set sail that day,
For a three hour tour,
A three hour tour.

The weather started getting rough,
The tiny ship was tossed.
If not for the courage of the fearless crew
The Minnow would be lost.
The Minnow would be lost.

The ship set ground on the shore
Of this uncharted desert isle
With Gilligan,
The Skipper too.
The millionaire
And his wife,
The movie star,
The professor and Mary Ann,
Here on Gilligan's Isle.

(Ending verse)

So this is the tale of our castaways,
They're here for a long long time.
They'll have to make the best of things,
It's an uphill climb.

The first mate and his Skipper too
Will do their very best,
To make the others comf'terble
In their tropic island nest.

No phone, no lights, no motor car,
Not a single luxury
Like Robinson Crusoe
It's primitive as can be.

So join us here each week my friends,
You're sure to get a smile,
From seven stranded castaways
Here on Gilligan's Isle!
