Hearing aids

Post by Ernie » Tue Oct 27, 2020 7:46 am

I had to order a new set of hearing aids as I seemed to have mulched one with the mower couple weeks ago and the replacement warranty expired. I have gone to Costco the last 3 times and found them very good. They provide an excellent hearing test, good equipment and wonderful backup and warrantees. I just ordered a set for $1500 that I had quoted previously from audiologists for 4 times that amount. I have 6 months to decide to keep them without penalty, 3 years full warranty and replacement of each aid one time if lost or broken and unlimited visits at no charge if they need adjustment or whatever. They are the largest distributor of hearing aids in the US and I don't like to talk too much about it around here because it is becoming more difficult to get an test appointment within 2-3 weeks. My hearing is deteriorating and this time I was told the best I can expect is 65% comprehension but it beats the alternative. I get tired of asking people to repeat themselves and they are tired of me asking. :D

Hearing Aids absolutely changed my world.

I'm very fortunate that my Health Insurance pays 100% for hearing aids costing up to $10K and they'll replace them every three years. I've had mine for almost two years and love them. They also came with a bonus; Bluetooth connectivity that allows me to receive TV, phone, tablet, and computer audio streams.

What a huge improvement they've made in my life!

Do they make hearing aids to block people out? My hearing is good if there is no background noise. And I was artillery in the Army.

After my VA hearing aids kicked the bucket, I decided to buy my own since the drive to the VA Hospital for repairs as an all day affair. The hearing aids I bought had an adjustment to them to lower, raise and also cancel out background noise.

That adjustment to drown out some of the background noise is important to me because like sitting at a table in a restaurant , I could not even understand the person next to me or across from me because of the background noise. Not all hearing aids offer that so ask your questions when you see the specialist.

I just got mine replaced after 3 years. They are rechargeable and came with a remote which I promptly lost. They are adjustable with the ear controls. They are not perfect but they are free.

Did not want the rechargeable units, if I forget or the recharger dies then I would be screwed. Batteries are cheap. They are about 25 cents each and last 7-10 days. I specified being able to eliminate background noise as those work the best for me but I will find out Wednesday what was ordered. I have 6 months to decide whether to keep or not. They have blue tooth which I need to hear the phone ring and I enjoy walking around stores talking on the phone without taking it out of my pocket with the sound coming through the aids. People are never sure if I am talking to them or just off my meds but they usually just leave me alone.

Picked up the new aids today. Going to have to do some reading to understand all the features. I can program background noise reduction and many other things using my phone. Great sound and good comprehension for me. Every time I get new aids I realize how noisy I am and that everything around me makes even more noise. For $1500 I am impressed, or will be as soon as I can figure them out.

Is the $1500 price for one or two aids?

That price is for 2 hearing aids, it was $1499.99 out the door for the Phonak KS 9.0. They have other aids available depending on your needs. I have about 54% hearing loss so I need some good help. This is my 3rd set with Costco and they are the best set yet and pretty user friendly. My only real complaint is that so many people are going to Costco for aids it takes a couple weeks to get a hearing test but they can get you in for help quicker and my data says these aids can be reprogrammed over my phone if necessary.

My hearing aids come from the VA free. I'm on my 3rd set. They work fine for me. I'll never forget the first time I went in the woods with them on. It sounded like the birds were tweeting in all caps.
They are not rechargeable, have to replace the batteries about once a week, All batts & acces. are free, shipped from VA.
If you're a Vet, you need to check into that. Nothing to lose.
I rarely ever buy a rifle, but when I do, it's a Henry.

Now hear birds, tree frogs and crickets. Forgot about them making noise.
