.50 Cal. Single shot
Just another subject to talk about. What are the chances Henry will make a single shot in one of the big 50’s? 500 s&w 500 linebaugh or 500 JHR? Would they have to redo the barrel? Maybe simply not thin it down so much. What do you think?

Single shot elephant gun tells me two things,
1) You're hunting something big and dangerous.
2) You don't want to miss.

I know from experience with my 500 S&W, a long gun would definitly help control the abuse that my revolver puts out. That's why I no longer shoot it!Hidden Mortimer wrote:Just another subject to talk about. What are the chances Henry will make a single shot in one of the big 50’s? 500 s&w 500 linebaugh or 500 JHR? The still have their "Suggestion Box" on the Henry website, yes? Take the plunge and post a note to them, see what they say!
But, like others, I'm curious: what would you do with it?

Lot clearing no doubt...very expensive lot clearing!

That $400 Single Shot would need a $4,000 scope to do it justice!

Re: .50 Cal. Single shot
I would just shoot it. I think it would be fun to have and load for. I already went to the site and put a suggestion. Since there are no loading dies for the other two I can settle for the 500 s&w. H&R made one in the same caliber so I figured why not Henry too.ESquared wrote:The still have their "Suggestion Box" on the Henry website, yes? I have to laugh when I see ads fo .500 S & W guns for sale - most reference something like ‘only ten rounds fired’That's why I no longer shoot it!
Personally I do not own any gun that is not an ‘all day shooter’

Re: .50 Cal. Single shot
I have a Super Redhawk Alaskan .480R and would love a Big Boy Steel in this caliber. It's a terrific and under appreciated cartridge with tolerable recoil. It would be a great camp gun and would be bad medicine for bears. I should have bought a Rossi Puma Stainless carbine years ago when they did come that way. I don't see any need for a single shot. If I were hunting hogs, for example, I sure would like a rapid follow up shot, or three.
Maybe the reason I never went for the Rossi was the cockeyed sight (or mag tube) in this pic.

A really big bore makes the gun light for easy carry (the Puma was just 6 pounds), but I imagine a .500 S&W hot load would just about send the stock through your collar bone.

Re: .50 Cal. Single shot
TC makes the 500 S&W in the Encore platform. Can get barrels from them or MGM in either pistol or rifle lengths. As for me, the 45-70 in the Encore is plenty. Can go as to as you want/can stand in the Encore, but can go as light as you want, too. Ain't no cowboy action loads in the 500 S&W.

I looked at loads with 5744 and they’re listed at about 1200 with the revolver. I would imagine that would not be too hot of a load. Maybe 45-70 marlin level.

Re: .50 Cal. Single shot
Henry already offers single shot elephant guns ===> H015-4570 & H015B-4570 ...Henry88 wrote:Single shot elephant gun tells me two things,

Re: .50 Cal. Single shot
The difference in bore diameter between a 45-70 and .500 S&W is only 0.043, so the basic barrel blank of the Henry 45-70 should easily handle it. It'd just be a matter of if there'd be great enough demand. Doesn't everyone need a .50 caliber of some sort?

I guess that’s up to the individual.Doesn't everyone need a .50 caliber of some sort?
I am one of the ‘practical’ types who owns guns in calibers that are fairly common, relatively inexpensive to load for and I can shoot all day without punishing myself.

Mine has been sitting in it's original case for the last 10 years.

.
I was wish list shopping Wednesday at Coastal Farm. They were selling .50 caliber rounds with a machined notch in the case for use as a bottle opener. Not much punishment in the use for that. Didn't buy one though.
