I got a steel 45-70 Last week. I have not shot it yet, in the teens here. I did scope it. Maybe next week.

Welcome to the forum!

Oh, and be sure to go to the “how many” thread and add your Henry to the total.

Bowbldr,

What did you scope it with? And we need pics, of course.
It's in the way below zero here  , so I'm in no hurry to shoot mine, either. I'm still sorta wrestling with scope vs peep, but leaning hard toward a 2.75X Burris scope.

yours is the first Henry single shot 45-70 that I've heard of .... really looking forward to your range and use reports .... I'm particularly interested in your recoil impressions

I put a Leupold VX1 3x9x40 Scope on it. My son does the reloading, What I think I want is 350 and 405 grain at 1300 fps we are using reloader7 and WLR primers, any help here sure would help. Got bad shoulders and want to keep it fun. Haven't fiquired out how to post pic yet.

no if's, and's, or but's ... out of the box our CCH 45-70, with maximum dangerous game level loads, had a very harsh kick .... with Cowboy Action loads ( like these HSM factory loads ===> http://www.cabelas.com/product/HSM-COWB ... s?slotId=0 ) <=== the recoil isn't bad at all .... if you tailor your hand loads to Cowboy Action levels, you'll most certainly enjoy spending time on a range

Jebar, I posted about my 45-70 on a couple of the other single shot threads, BigAl posted some pics for me on the "I should have one in a few days..." thread. They're still pretty scarce, Bowbldr's is the second I've seen here.
Maybe we need to consolidate all of them into a single shot 45-70 thread.
I want to check recoil, too, so when (if?) it warms up enough, I think I'll try if with the original iron sights, just to see. I'm expecting it to be like that of a Marlin levergun fitted with a peep I had a while back.

A range report, when you can, would be very appreciated. My local Henry dealer hasn't seen any of the single shots, yet.

My Henrys both like reloader 7. The CCH likes the Hornady 350 with 47 grains of RL7 under it. Use at your own risk but its under the max listed. Im still load testing in the All Weather 45-70 but RL 7 is showing promise there at maybe a lesser charge. It also likes the 300 grain bullets. Which if one wants to reduce felt recoil is the bullet to use. Al
