Accuracy Question

Post by parson48 » Mon Dec 07, 2020 7:05 pm

Those of you who own a .357 Henry single shot, what kind of accuracy are you getting?

Took mine to the range recently for it's first workout. It is scoped, and shooting from a bench at a 50 yard range I was getting 2 1/2" to 5" "groups". This is very disappointing. Tried various loads and bullet weights and none shot very well.

I had a H&R .357 Handi rifle, which I eventually reamed to maxi, that would consistently shoot 1" to 1 1/2" at the same distance.

I did fill out Henry's online warranty work request, but have not had a response as of this time.

Surely these rifles ought to shoot better than this. How does yours do?

Thanks.
Bill

Bill are you using factory ammo. I have one and at 50yards off bags will shoot better than 2 1/2. I reload my own. Its been a while since I shot mine but maybe I can find a target in the range report thread

You can check mine out here Bill. I use a red dot and I know I could have tighten these up with a scope.

This is my first trip out (and only so far :( ) with my BBS 357. 50 yards with a scope from a bench shooting cheap 158 grain FMJ factory ammo. I know I can improve on this with more trigger time and better ammo. I shot this target without a cheek rest which I have since acquired. Using the Henry mount my scope is way too high for the stock. Just getting a better cheek weld should improve my accuracy. I believe the gun has the potential just gotta fix the outside forces, ie ammo, better sight picture and of course the nut behind the trigger.

Not a single shot but hopefully some encouraging info for yours.

I shot several loads- factory and handloads. Your pictured groups are more like I would expect.

This is my first Henry firearm, so,from what I hear about the company, I'm hoping that they will do something to remedy the problem.

At 72, I've been shooting and reloading for a bunch of years and I know that any decent rifled barrel ought to shoot better than this one does.

I really appreciate the responses.

Bill.

Well, I got a shipping label from Henry today. Packed it up and dropped it off at a local UPS center. We'll see if it shoots better when it comes back.

I had an issue with my Henry 30-30 right out of the box a few years ago... I was sure disappointed that first day on the range! But, I was sure impressed with Henry's service and the rifle when they sent back. I hope that you have the same experience! keep us posted. :D

My rifle was logged in at Henry on December 12th. Called earlier this week and there is no progress report. The fellow that I talked with-nice guy- said that the recall on the single shot rifles has created a back log.

I'm not in a big hurry; just want it to shoot much better when I get it back.

that's certainly understandable .... I also understand your desire to have it back as quickly as is possible .... my bet is they have refined the process and have a good number of folks working on them .... :)

I had a problem with the barrel on my BBS .357 last spring. The first time the rifle went to Henry it was back in 10 days. Unfortunately that barrel also had problems and was at Henry for 7 weeks because of the covid and recall. I believe it would have been longer but I emailed Anthony and Henry fixed it and shipped with in 2 days. I do not like to have to send back guns to the manufacturer but Henry finally fixed the problem. Hang in there if you are not in a hurry but an email to Anthony may speed things up. Looking forward to a range report.

Well....., after more than 3 months, I received an e-mail that my rifle is being replaced. Looking forward to receiving it and getting out to the range. I will post an update on results.

It is a long time to wait on a return just to have the rifle replaced. I hope the new rifle's accuracy lives up to your expectations. Looking forward to your range report.

UPS delivered new gun yesterday. Nice grain. I got a scope mounted (necessity with 73 year old eyes). May shoot today if range doesn't have several inches of mud.

Trusting that my first one was an anomaly. Nephew has one in .44 mag that is a great shooter.

Will share results.

Made it to the range this morning. Day/night difference between this replacement rifle and the first one.

I was able to try a few different loads and it definitely prefers heavier bullets. 180 grain cast wide flat point bullets over max load of 2400 had all touching at 50 yards. Several other loads shot well, but this was the most accurate.

I'll continue to experiment with it. I want to try some 158 and 180 grain XTPs on my next outing. Will try the 100 yard range also.

I am well pleased!!
