Receiver question...

Post by Vaquero » Tue May 17, 2022 10:14 pm

This came to me as I look at a few of the recent SS rifle threads.
Does anyone know if the receivers of the pistol cal. and rifle cal. are different, or the same?
Can they handle the same pressures?

Why don't you just call H.R.A. as they made it so they should know.

Guess I'll have to as this seems, even though several own one they know little about them.

I don’t have any knowledge of the single shot rifles but I do know that the .410 shotgun I recently purchased is built on the 45/70 frame. Not much help I know but “that’s all I gots”. :D

No idea I did have a single shot rossi years ago with 410 and 17HMR barrels, they were also available in centrefire cals.
Same receiver for all and the rimfire barrels were set up with the barrel sitting higher in the action so the firing pin struck the rim.

Aha! Did have me wondering. Those 444 Marlin are an under appreciated round. Have not owned a .44 mag, but, have shot a bud;s 444 M to know I like it! It's a damn good round.

That they are Tom, I actually have a pair 444's, a Sporter Safety, and a P.
Was lookin at the Henry SS and noticed it comes with a 1:20 twist... which would be great for a 300gr+ cast.
Just lengthen the chamber a wee bit and well there ya go.
If it's the same receiver, then the pressure should be no issue.

Randy
There is a guy who advertises on GB all the time about punching a 357 to 357 max. Mike Bellm also does the same thing and has been for sometime. Mike was also doing the 350 Legend before Henry released it this last year. I know on another forum I have read where a 444 has been done.

Al, how are the factory triggers on those things?
I've only seen one, but I never tried the trigger.

They had a recall on the Single shots a little over a year ago. Lots of people modified the spring for the hammer which also controlled trigger pull. I had to send mine back to Henry for the recall in which they updated the spring and the trigger. The hammer pull prior to this was real heavy. You needed a hammer spur on it so you could pull it back easier. Now its much easier and the trigger pull is good. The single shots for sale now have the new system in them. If you buy or look at a used one inside the trigger guard is a dimple that will be there if it has been updated.

Thanks Al, I remember something about the recall.
I'll be lookin fer a new one, but if I found a used one at a good price I would snatch it.

At one time I thought about getting another one and sending it out for a 357 max chambering through Bellm. I have a 357 max in a 10 inch contender still in the safe. The 357 max is a cool cartridge I think but I just had other things that were more important at the time. Now I think the 357 is just fine for what I need one for. All I do with it is shoot steel.
