I had cataract surgery on my dominant, shooting eye in the middle of September. One day after surgery the doc measured my vision at 20/20. So far so good. Three weeks later at another follow-up appointment the doc measured my vision still at 20/20. To say I am thrilled is an understatement. So I took my new eye to the range this past Thursday to try it out with iron sights on my Henry BBS and my M1 Garand.

I started by putting on my low power (+1.50) readers, thinking I would need them to see the front sight clearly. Yes, the front sight was crisp, but the target at 50 yds was way too blurry. So I ditched the readers and tried using my unaided eye. The front sight was not as crisp, but I could see the target clearly. I can happily say that I don't think I have ever shot any better that I did on Thursday with either the Henry or the Garand.

Here are pictures of my two targets. The first photo is 30 rounds of PMC Bronze 158gr JSP 357magnum at 50 yards using the Henry BBS. The second photo is 16 rounds of HXP 30-06 M2 Ball (Greek surplus) at 50 yards using the M1 Garand.

I can't say enough good things about the care I received at the Wheaton Eye Clinic.

That's great shootin' with iron sights at 50 yds. That M1 still has what it takes too looking at that ragged multi holed group!

Looks like they did a great job on the cataracts and you too on the targets.

congrats on the surgery .... my wife just completed cataract surgery on both eyes ..... she's worn glasses since she was 14 .... her vision is now 20/20 in both eyes and its taken some adjustment for me get used to seeing her going about without glasses .

Congrats on the eye surgery and excellent shooting. You must be pleased with all.

I love to hear a good report like this. I am do to go in for the cataract surgery on my right ( dominant eye) this month sometime when they notify me. I also have astigmatism so that will be corrected also with the new lens. Medicare wont pay for the lens I am going to get because it will allow me not to wear glasses as it will cover both long and short distance. I will be paying $2800 out of my own pocket for that technology, Medicare will cover the rest. Right now, it's hard to see the 100 yard target through a 9 power scope.

I opted for the basic lens that corrects for distance. Before cataract surgery I was very near sighted. It’s almost like a miracle that my vision is now 20/20 out of that eye. I use inexpensive readers (+1.50) to see the printed page and computer screen. With my insurance (United healthcare) my cost so far has totaled $726 for the surgeon, anesthesia, and the surgery center.

Looks good to me, well done.

That's awesome. I can't wait. I hate paying that big hunk out of my pocket but I have fought this astigmatism for so long that it has become a pain trying to focus on even reading with one eye fighting the other. It's only been in the last couple of years that they were able to make a lens that would correct it.I know it's a big hunk of change and the basic lens would probably suit me just fine but I kept thinking of the $6000 worth of scuba equipment sitting in my closet that I will never be able to use again do to back surgery and COPD. I even had to buy a mask that cost $500 because I couldn't see my dive computer or watch underwater without a special lens made into it.I figure this $2800 is strictly for me.Enjoy your new eye. I am enjoying my new eye, almost to the point of being giddy. I’ve been recommending the same surgery to all my family and friends. I hope yours goes as well as mine has.
