Range Report: serious BB plinking

Post by Sir Henry » Thu Sep 24, 2020 3:34 pm

To go to the range it’s a day off from working around the house for an hour of shooting. I can’t take the time off so I plink a lot around the house with a BB gun or a pellet gun. Today I shot the Red Ryder.

This is a slight telephoto view of my backstop which is about ten yards away.

Some of the gong targets are small and it is a challenge to hit them.

Some are bigger.

They each have a different sound.

Some are huge and a sure hit evertime.

Those with 45-70’s might think this is child’s play. It can be or it can be serious. Try hitting a sub-two inch gong at thirty feet three times in a row!

What I like about the BB gun is that you can easily see the BB flying so you know if it was you or the gun.

I like it! If you can't shoot the big ones, the small ones fill the bill. Having fun!

Ohh, I think I know what happened to Oldbrass' coffee scooper 8-) !

Excellent! No reason not to have fun when you can't get to the range.

Plus I can’t have bacon and eggs at the real range.

Nice setup for relaxed BB plinking! Do you get many BB's bouncing back from hitting the steel? I had one of those green rubber spinners really designed for 22 cal. and up powder burners and the lead pellets or BB's would whistle as the flew by my head. Stopped using that for an air rifle target.

Love it, Gene. 30 feet is a long range shot with a BB gun, especially on those tiny targets. Well done.

Forty, I've had pellets bounce back and ricochet from 22 cal spinner targets, too, but it was from 22 cal spinner targets that were beaten up and egged out from shooting up too close with the 22s.

As for the BBs bouncing back and ricocheting, for sure. It's a real danger. However, there is good news, on this one. Go to pyramidair https://www.pyramydair.com/airgun-myths-bbsand buy some Air Venturi Dust Devils which are frangible BBs that turn too dust after hitting a solid surface or the H&N Smart shot BBs which deform like a pellet upon impact and drop to the ground or stay in the trap. Can use them in a standard pellet trap, instead of a special BB trap. Now that these are available, I plan to get a good BB gun and do some indoor shooting over the winter.

BB’s no. Pellets yes. I only shoot pellets at the traps.

I rechecked my distance because I was going from memory. To my surprise it’s 15 yards not 10. Today I shot the 2” spoon twice in a row two times. Granted there were a lot of misses in between and a lot of one hits. I shot about 100 BB’s that took about an hour. I would say I hit it 10 times total but I wasn’t counting totals hits just repeats. It took about 20 shots to hit it the first time today.

Today was a good day though. I’ve also gone out and not hit it at all. It takes just as much concentration to manage breathing, heart rate and trigger control as any firearm.

The metal targets are of all sizes and I would say it would take a six inch target to get hit ever time.

This is all offhand. So yes I did some serious plinking today.
