one objective for the range report from N Idaho

Post by Paratus » Tue Aug 04, 2020 3:54 pm

Afternoon,

Well today I went to the range with one objective, does the 44 steel carbine prefer one ammo over another?

Well despite the hit to the wallet that Buffalo Bore represents it appears that it shoots more accurately. For those that have read my prior reports, note that today was off the "bag", sitting a shooters table at Fernan Rod/Gun club on a open to public day.

Targets are 12"x17.5", 50 yards and the small holes are my 22 unsupported but sitting. The big holes are the 44 (LOL) the 3 at approx 6 o'clock are the B Bore. Interesting also ( I think) the significant change in audible and impact on the shoulder, the B Bore Dangerous game shoots better and thumps harder! Other ammo used was the Federal hydrashock and Underwoods.

The 22 keeps my ego in check or is that lifted....

I think I may invest in a skinner peep sight, 50 yards with a buckhorn, corrected vision, and that front sight looks more like "I think that is a good sight picture...."

Good shooting Paratus. Im guessing you dont reload. Id be tempted to try some Hornady ammo in 44 also.

Pretty good shootin' if you ask me. Buffalo Bore is good ammo but not cheap.

Good you got out and shot. I’ve not shot the BB brand, so no opinion there. But, the peep sight is a good step up in improving your sight picture. I put the Skinner on my Henry carbine and really like the results.

I reload my brass and have found that the more ‘stout’ loads tend to do better. You might read up on more brands and find alternative loads that won’t break the bank.
Remember, it's not how many guns you have. It's how many bullets you have.

Good shootin' with the .44 ! I have a box of BB and bought it for my Ruger SBH Hunter and never shot any of it. Thinks it's 300 gr. bear load ammo.
Don't own the Hunter anymore but do have a Ruger SBH. Don't know if they will chamber in my Henry carbine.

Good shooting! I've heard that BB ammo can be stout. But, accurate. Seems so. Have you thought about handloading your own ammo? Either way, fine shooting.

Paratus... What weight BB round were you shooting? The box I have is the 305 gr. LBT .44 Mag rated at 1325 FPS.
The COL is 1.620

All,
You all are always generous with your praise even if unwarranted based on your results posted....Ahem RR!
RifleTom, I do not reload, at this stage in my life it is more about jettisoning stuff than acquiring.
Fortyshooter to your detailed questions I can offer the following culled from conversations with both Wayne at B Bore and Tom at Henry:

Henry perspective is the OAL appropriate is 1.61 per SAAMI specs
B Bore says any of the rounds will fire and no issue regarding pressures. HOWEVER their items 4F, 4D, 4A, & 4B will not feed due to OAL and will require single feed through the open ejection port/chamber.

I have shot the B Bore item#'s: 14B (255gr hard cast), 14C (190 grain soft cast), & the 4DG (265 grain mono metal-my favorite so far).

I will likely buy a Skinner, but will wait until Sept as we are leaving on a "grandkid" tour sometime this weekend. Gotta load the truck camper on the truck and stock it etc.

PS-Fortyshooter any response from Henry about barrel length?

Great range report. Thanks. I've been using BB ammo for years in 44 mag and the 45 Colt Ruger only loads and, oh yeah, not for the faint of heart (or for someone looking for cheap ammo.) Good reminder on the OAL for you lever gun shooters.

Well looks like my BB product 4A won't work as is.

Haven't heard a reply back from Henry yet and might call them again.

Correction.... I loaded up some of my Buffalo Bore 305 Gr. Heavy .44 Mag and they cycle just fine thru my Henry .44 Carbine.
They measure 1.623 COL. Great news!
