Got down to my range this morning to try out my new Remington 1858 revolver. Brought along various .45 Colt loads to try in the
conversion cylinder and will shoot the .44 cal. lead balls at a later date.
Loads were... 230 gr. soft lead Speer .452 bullets loaded over 5.5 gr. of Red Dot. Then same bullet loaded with 25.9 gr. of Alliant Black MZ
in .050 shorter Hornady .45 Colt cases. The reason for that was to arrive at my preferred seating depth and have powder just touching bottom of the shorter 230 gr. Speer bullet.
The Remmie shot really well and just a bit high so I adjusted my hold for that. Nice little group shown on target was the Red Dot load and that round is a very nice comfortable shooting load at the bottom of Cowboy Action load data for Red Dot.

The Black MZ load were really fun to shoot....loads of smoke and accurate too as you will see!

Then I heard a rustle in the brush and ol' Gunfighter Deadwood showed up trying to claim my turf !!
Well I had a fresh cylinder of Black MZ .45 loaded up and let him get within 20 ft. He was a bit late on his draw and showed him the smoking end of a

What a way to end the day! A little Elmer's and saw dust and he will be patched up for more action!

Good shootin forty. Bet old Deadwood won't be trying that again, LOL. Remember what Wyatt Earp said about a fast draw, " take your time, in a hurry".

I put some extra wood on Deadwood's backside to help hold him together from those .45 slugs! I'm going to use him as a pattern for cardboard targets or paper targets that will be same life size.

When I got home I removed the cylinder and it and the Black MZ brass went into a moose milk soak...Ballistol/water mix.
Then swabbed the barrel good with same mix. Ran a brush thru the bore several times and clean as new!
No leading issues with any of the loads other than the residue from the Black MZ.

Good shootin cowboy, I think you killed him with the first shot but better safe than sorry. He might have plugged you in the back if you had walked away.
