Henry .45 Colt. Two loads! And a .22!

Post by Rifletom » Thu Feb 27, 2020 7:29 pm

Finally got back to the range today in the foothills. A few loads to try in the .45. 8.5gr Unique, 7.0gr Universal, 7.5gr Alliant BE-86 and my standard 8.0gr Unique. All with Missouri 250gr rnfp plain[non coated]. They were all are good, but, the old standard of 8.0gr Unique and RR's load of 7.0gr Universal won out. Done trying different loads for that one. The .22 rifle is a Marlin 25N bolt with a 5 round magazine. And a nice stout 22" barrel. A few years ago, I mounted a pretty old Bushnell Scopechief IV on it. Still very clear and the adjustments work very well. At 50 yards, both rifles shot very good groups. A pleasant day at the range. Did my shooting and was back at the hacienda by noon. Dang near forgot how much fun those.22 rifles are. Gonna try to go again next Thursday. And now to make some spaghetti and shrimp and of course a beer or two or.......!

How much difference on the target was there between the 8.0 and 8.5 Unique loads?
I loaded up some 265 gr. WFN bullets I had from Cast Performance and at the 8.7 range of Unique and will shoot them in my revolvers and my 1873 Uberti.

Sounds like a fun day there, I also have a 25N, I was thinking it had a 7 round mag.
I have a NM also. ;)
I never went below 8.5 on the Unique loads.
What no pics :?:

forty, not much difference, but, the 8.0gr was a bit tighter.
Randy try as I might, this dinosaur cannot upload pics. I took a few, just can't figure out how to go from iphone to computer to here.
Pi**'* me off, but, it's my own untech skills. Was really happy with that 25N and old scope.

What I do with pics taken on my ipad. I post them up on my facebook account "For Me Only" and then on my desktop computer I grab them off facebook and send them to my main pictures file. From there on my desktop I load them here using Attachments.
Beatin' around the bush but it works.

Great shooting and a nice range area! One question is why do they leave those large rocks laying around target area?

Thank you Randy for getting those up. Much appreciated.
forty, those rocks are for the target stand base if it's windy. They always tell shooters, DO NOT shoot at the rocks. They do keep an eye on things.
It is a nice range. That one in the pictures is for handgun calibers and .22's. There is also a rifle range that goes to, I believe, 250 yards. They also have private ranges for group shoots. Fun place. Thanks again Randy and the offer Al.

Looks like fun Tom. When I take out a 22 to shoot and get to just relax and shoot it.I always come away with the same thought you had. Why dont I do this more often. I dont have a bolt action 22 but Ive spotted one I might grab. Tom it looks like there is some clay targets there on the berm to the left. Can you shoot clays there on the berms with 22 and the bigger calibers?

Al, a little late to the reply, but, yes you can. And I do! All the time. Wife and I just got back from hiking around Joshua Tree Nat'l. Park Fri and this morning. Just got in. Pooped! Dang woman likes to hike around. Going back to the range next Thursday. Thinking 30-30 and .22 rifle. Must expand my horizons ya know. 8-)

That always a plus in my book. Targets are ok for sighting in but Im a reactive target shooter myself. Wanna bring the 5er out there one of these days and go see the big trees. Need to check out a place to stay up that way.
