Cowgirl Corner: Contender Hot Shot

Post by North Country Gal » Mon Aug 20, 2018 6:54 pm

Yup, Contender Hot Shot. No, not me, the gun ... or, more specifically, a Contender with a vintage Hot Shot barrel, this one in 45 Colt. It wears a vintage correct 1.3x TC Lobo pistol scope on a rail mount for 45 Colt shooting.
Image

What is a Hot Shot barrel? A Hot Shot barrel is a barrel designed to shoot revolver shot loads, which were very popular with handgun shooters back in the 70s and well into the 80s. Instead of a bullet, then, you were shooting a load of shot, something akin to a mini shotgun. Hot shot barrels were rifled, not smoothbore, to keep things legal and also to allow the shooter to shoot regular revolver loads as well as shot loads.

Where the Contender hot shot barrels improved on shooting hot shot loads out of a revolver was a detachable shot tube. The shot tube had rifling, too, but the the rifling was straight with no twist. The function of the shot tube was not to provide a choke, but to reduce the spin of the shot charge via its straight rifling. Spinning of a shot charge via rifling twist is a pattern killer. The tubes helped improve patterns. Here's a pic of the same gun with an un-scoped 44 mag Hot Shot barrel. Note the porting on the sleeve where the shot tube attaches. The porting also helps with patterns and also reduces muzzle flip.

Note that when shooting a Hot Shot barrel, it is imperative to remove the shot tube when firing regular ammo. A solid bullet encountering a radical change in rifle twist as it travels down the barrel produces some very nasty recoil! Not fun.

To be honest, the reason I grabbed this Contender rig, this week, was that I had an itch to shoot 45 Colt (RR is to blame for this, by the way :)) and this is currently my only gun in 45 Colt. Hope to change that soon, but no complaints at all about shooting 45 Colt in a Contender, none at all. Here's a target with those nice big 45 cal holes that includes a few tweaks of the scope to pull shots to the center. Ammo was fairly traditional 45 Colt 250 grain RNL ammo rated at 875 fps, so. Not Ruger only loads (and the Contender is rated for those kinds of loads), by any means, but a bit more oomph than cowboy loads. Recoil was there, but by no means a factor when shooting this Contender.
Image

Note that this barrel is NOT chambered to take 410 shotshells as many Contender barrels were, both from the factory and by owners who reamed standard 45 Colt barrels to take 410 shells. The problem with shooting 45 Colt in a barrel chambered for the longer 410 shotshells is that long bullet jump before the bullet hits rifling. 45 Colt accuracy, then, in a 45/410 barrel tends to be mediocre at best. These 45/410 barrels are better used for shooting 410 shells instead of 45 Colt.

Have to say, it was a treat to be shooting the 45 Colt in a handgun, again, especially in such an accurate gun as the Contender. Time for this gal to add another 45 Colt gun to the collection, or two ... or maybe ... :)

I've always liked the looks and handling of the Remington. I think it would be a great choice for a 45 Colt single action.

NCG,

That's a really sharp-looking and differently-designed gun. How do you find these :?:  :?:

As I've lately been "hooked" by the .45LC caliber, have kept my eyes open for handguns with this chambering. Just this week I came across another interesting pistol.

Wondering if you can discuss (a Topic Review) this Pedersoli Howduh .45/.410, whatever you might know about it? Here is a link and some photos. http://ifg-na.com/

It was first released at the 2016 Shot Show, and is now available in the US firearms market. I think the "coach gun" configuration is really cool 8-) , plus the choice of shooting either a centerfire .45LC round or a .410 shotshell or slug is also a neat option.

Looking at the photos, the biggest Q in my mind is how to hold it. I'm certain that shooting it in either caliber would carry a fairly light recoil. And it seems like it would be handled more so like a shotgun using two hands, with the non-trigger hand supporting the forend/barrel. I don't know the weight, and whether or not it can be handled solely by the shooting hand without opposite hand support.

I'd look forward to your thinking and comments on this .45LC. TIA!

PT, I've been shooting Contenders on a regular basis for almost thirty years, now. Contender shooters are actually a community of their own in the shooting world and we do a lot of trading between ourselves.

As for that Howdah, it would be a fun gun to shoot with 410 shells, but I would not buy it with the intention of accurately shooting 45 Colt, for the same reason I outlined, above, about Contender 45 Colt/410 barrels. You just cannot get full 45 Colt potential accuracy out of the longer chamber needed for a 410 shell. As for shooting 410, it's going to be strictly an up close kind of gun as far as useable patterns. That rifling needed to make the gun legal will spin the shot charges and produce pretty anemic patterns. All in all, I suspect most folks would buy this gun for the cool factor rather than serious performance.

I easily can believe you've been shooting Contenders for close to three decades....your Range Reports (target POIs) are more than proof enough! :)

No, wouldn't consider buying this gun -- here's why. The sight system is quite similar to the Stoeger 20ga coach gun I once had; side-by-side with a bead front sight. I didn't have the ramp configuration on the coach gun, and the bead sat on the rail between the barrels. But I don't think that would make any difference. With my crossed-eyed dominance issue, I couldn't shoot the Howduh worth an anthill of beans. I know for sure the majority of my POIs out of the Howduh would be "duh" results. Even though the 20ga coach was a hoot to shoot, I didn't do that well with it and just let it go.

What is of interest to me, however, are my other Q's, e.g. how to hold the Howduh, shooting with dominant hand only or both hands, and so on. Any thots on those Qs?

I'd agree with your assessment on the where or what the market would be for the Howduh. The "cool 8-) factor" is mainly it. It is definitely an eye-catcher firearm from my view of it! ;)

Thanks.

Have you tried it with any shot loads?
Would be very interested to here how it patterned with and without the attachment.

Yes, I have tried the Contender with hot shot loads, but as with any revolver cartridge shot loads, range is very limited. All of these hot shot load guns are basically up close snake gun kind of guns, not something I would recommend for actual small game hunting. Back in the day, that's how a lot of folks were using revolver shot loads - for snakes and up close varmints.

On the other hand, I have used Contender 45 Colt/410 barrels with 410 bird shot shells and have done very well out to 15 yards or a bit farther on squirrels and rabbits. Curiously, the shorter 10" 45 Colt/410 barrels have patterned better than the 14" 45 Colt/410 barrels, probably because the rifling in the shorter barrels ends up producing less spinning of the shot charge. I would have no problem using a Contender 45 Colt/410 barrel as a survival gun. Also lots of fun and very challenging to shoot blue rock with these Contender 410 barrels.

PT, if I was shooting one of those Howdah rigs, I'd probably try to shoot it like a Mare's Leg using some kind of silhouette hold incorporating some kind of cheek weld or something. I, too, am cross eye dominant, so i'd have to close one eye and do my best. Not really a gun I'd be interested in buying, though. Be down at the bottom of the list of guns I want or would use.

I did play around with shot loads in a 44 carbine and 7 yards was about the effective range.
One day I will get around to loading some of the speer shot capsules in something to see how they go.

Let us know how they shoot. I still see some of the CCI 357 shot loads on the shelves, now and then, but nothing anymore on the 44 mag and, especially, the 45 Colt and 41 mag. Hot Shot barrels were made in all of these at one time.
