Still, some days at the range can be much better than others. Today was not a particularly good one. It was a coming together of several factors. A dark, damp day. No Packers game. Hunting season is near.

So, the range was filled with shooters who make a guy really nervous, and who need to be watched every minute of their time on the firing line.

I only got to shoot about 30 or 40 rounds from my friend’s awesome Model 41 .22 pistol. I did shoot a penny at 25 yards, which was good. Still, it really is true that bad day at the range is better than a good day at work.

thanks for the reminder .... I've been retired for so long that my memory is a bit fuzzy about most work related things ...

First week in a very long time that we didn't make it to the range. The weather this week has been cold and snowy and less than ideal for shooting. To make things even worse, this is the week our club opens the range to the public prior to deer season so that the once a year shooters can sight in their deer guns. From experience, it's two weeks where we avoid going to the range. Can get pretty spooky.

It sure is nice being able to drive a few hundred feet up my road to shoot. I've thought about joining one of local gun clubs to be able to shoot longer range but if I get ambitious next Spring I'll have a longer range spot and it will still be less than a half mile drive up my dead end road.

New neighbors on the other side of the canyon aren't too happy about it but we were here first and were not shooting that much, maybe a couple times a month unless one of us gets a new gun. They called the cops earlier this year, a couple of Deputies showed up but they saw that our range was safe and we had permission to shoot there they were OK and actually stayed for about 10 minutes BSing about our misc. guns.

I am lucky, most of the time I have the whole range to myself. Especially from now until spring...

Wow, RR. Some beautiful panoramas there.

Plus one on that. It's gorgeous. As always, makes me homesick for the wide open spaces when I see such pics. Trees are okay, but they mostly just destroy the view.

I agree that a crowded range is a place you really have to be careful. There were many times I saw the lot packed, and didn't stay. Wasn't worth the risk, wouldn't get much done anyway.

During the two weeks our range opens to the public, we have a range officer on hand at all times to keep an eye on things and to help any newbies sight in their gun. That's a good thing, of course, but the range does get a bit more crowded than I like.

Our range is the same way and on the Saturday before opening day its an endless stream of hunters coming in and taking three shots and leaving. I've found most are safe. The reason it becomes unsafe is because the range is packed and there is often a line waiting for each bench.
