I haven't been able to get to the range after work lately. I get out just late enough that there's not enough time before sunset. I was able to get there today and have some fun. Part of my objective was to see how accurate I could be shooting quickly.

First was dialing in the scope on our Ruger 10/22. I had it shooting a hair right when my wife put several hits on the target. One more tweak and I was hitting the bullseye and hanging tennis balls easily. This was at 50 yds resting on a sandbag. Next was a few rounds of .22 through Henry, offhand, iron sights, 50 yds, 8" target. Not bad for intentionally not taking my time. I might replace the front sight with a fiber optic, though. It was hard to see in the low angle of October light and the target in shadows. I then moved back to the 100 yd line and fired a few rounds through my Winchester 30-30. Again it was offhand, iron sights, again intentionally without taking much time between shots. Three shots, 3 hits at an 8" target. Seven shots at a water tank from a commercial coffee brewer that is just about the size of a human torso (one apparently missed, but I know I was TOO rushed on a couple). I suspended it in front of some of the heavy steel plates already up, and the backside shows some of the ricochet of the bullet fragments off the plates. Yes, today felt good.

Nice example of just lay them in there, fast. Fine shooting. Reminds me that I need to take a break from my usual intense target work and just have some fun style shooting, now and then. Makes me want to grab one of our lever guns and have some fun. Love my single shots and bolt guns, but your post has me itching to get out one of our lever guns and head to the range.

nicely done ..... your (rapid fire, off hand, 100 yds) results with the 30-30 were exceptional .... what ammo did you use

Thank you! Remington 170gn Core-Lokt SP. I've been using only this all along so I can judge my accuracy accurately.

170 and 150 gr bullets seem to do really well in the old 30-30's .... I remember years ago I had some 110 gr'ers that our early generation Model 94 didn't like at all .... reading your report is motivating me to get out send some of the 150 gr Nosler/Winchester Ballistic Silvertips that I've been loading down range

That horizontal line of 6 in a row is pretty darn good...

Kidding aside, that looks like a real good day. Nice shooting and glad you enjoyed yourself, I do my best work when I don't get uptight and try too hard. Way to go.

well today was the day .. .. bottom line, we tested our 150 gr Nosler Combined Technology Ballistic Silvertips in my Grandfather's Winchester Model 94 that was built in 1941 .... per Nosler's recommendation we loaded 35 gr of W748 .... see post 1 in this thread ===> http://henryrifleforums.com/viewtopic.p ... r%27s+guns <=== it would be an understatement to say that they have proven to be exceptional .... per our chrony, their average velocity 10 ft from the muzzle was 2227 fps, in Nosler's manual they state their test averaged 2180 fps .... shooting from a bench with a support under the foregrip of the rifle, using the OEM buckhorn sights, I was able to hit skeet placed in a bank at 100 yards .... its been many, many years since I've fired a rifle with open sights at anywhere near that distance and I've never been able to consistently hit such a small target .... a basketball size target, yes; but not a small one the diameter of a skeet .... as a side note, a 100 yard zero should result in the bullet being about 8.3" low at 200 yards .... zero it a couple of inches high at 100 and our 30-30 can easily become a 200 yard hunting rifle .... without a scope, I wouldn't want to take such a shot but out to 100 +/- yards, I wouldn't hesitate to hunt deer, black bear, or boar with it
