Henry 44 Magnum @ 300 yards

Post by JEBar » Wed Sep 20, 2017 6:40 pm

the video in the link below is 6 min long .... the first half pertains directly to a Henry 44 Mag with open sights shooting at metal targets at 300 yards .... I must say that its not the best video I've seen but it does demonstrate the long range capability of a Henry 44 Mag ....

I'm going to have to visit my gun club some day and use their 300 yard range to test my 44 mag and 45-70's long range capabilities now that I've found my pet loads. The most I have to shoot safely is 140 yards up at my cabin.

To be continued...

I can assure you the 45-70 will have no problem performing at 300 yards. I cant speak for the 44 mag but I have shot 45-70 to 300 yards and beyond. Its a hoot to here steel ring out to 1000 yards with the 45-70. Al

Biggest issue is getting enough rear sight elevation for the long shots. The local range has a 200 yd option. I have to change to a longer Skinner peep stem in both my 44 mag and 45/70 to play out there.

I'm really glad to hear reports from folks who have successfully fired a Henry 44 and 45-70 at such distances .... I have a problem finding a range that can accommodate shots at more than 100 yards .... decades ago I had a chance to fire our Ruger Redhawk at a gallon jug something over 300 yards away .... in my mind the 240 gr JHP had to have a mortar type trajectory .... never did hit it but from the dirt kicking up, I did get close a couple of times .. ;)
