Cowgirl Corner: Single shot shoot out, 9/4

We headed to the range for a little relaxing shooting fun, today, but, as always, had some Contender stuff I needed to get setup, too. One of these was a lightly used barrel we found at a gun show for the Contender Carbine in 22 LR Match. Decided a low mounted red dot would make a nice, easy to shoot rig, so added an Ultradot 25 (4 MOA dot size). Since no range trip is complete, now, without one of the Winchester Low Wall single shots, brought along the Low Wall Hunter 22 LR with a Nikon EFR 3-9x scope. Used the same Remington/Eley ammo in each. Two very classy single shots, but very different for sure.

Contender Carbine 22 LR Match

The Contender was no surprise. Even with just a red dot, it shot very well, indeed. Due to its very light weight of about 5 pounds, not a great bench rifle and not even a great offhand shooter being so ultralight, but that excellent match barrel and superb trigger makes up for a lot. Couldn't keep them all in the 3" bull at 50, but pretty close.


No problem for Bill, though, but he cheated by using a rest.

Although the trigger is decent on this Winchester, it is not competition class like the Contender. On the other hand, this baby is an outstanding offhand rifle with enough weight and excellent balance to hang on target, even with the scope set at 6x. I pulled one shot, high, but I did call it. The other ten shots produced one of my very best targets of the year. This one will keep me warm on all the cold winter days to come.

What a fine rifle to shoot. Very user friendly, fun and accurate.

Thanks, guys. I know these aren't Henrys, but, hey, Henry is coming out with a single shot, right? Okay, no one has seen one yet ... I do plan to buy one, though, given my love of single shots in general.

Also wanted to feature another rifle equipped with a red dot. I really think the right red dot on a given rifle - and not all are right for every type of rifle - is an outstanding balance of ease of use and performance. Lots of myths about what these sights can and can't do, so I'll probably do a post on red dots on rifles as a separate topic.

Really pretty rifles - don't think Henry will be able to even begin to match the quality level of these guns....
