Today was a great day to send some big 'ol cowboy lead down range! So I did.

New ammo, first time through the 1860 Henry. Black Hills Ammunition 45 Colt 250 gr lead round nose flat point. It shoots pretty darn good. Best ammo so far in order of preference:
Winchester Super X 250 gr LFN (CONSISTENT in every way)
Black Hills 250 gr LRNFP (less than $1/round...best price yet)
Hornady 255 gr LRNFP (very pricey)
Remington Target 250 gr LRN (some feed issues in rifle, but works great as revolver ammo)
American Eagle 225 gr JSP

Ok, back to the range report. Weather is 80F, with a wind from the southwest at around 25mph. My range runs east-west. So I shot 26 rounds in total. 13 rounds in the tube each time. I don't normally do 13 because I don't like to compress the spring all the way until it bottoms out, but I wanted to take 2 full loads with me to the range, and not blow a whole box of 50 (or more) tonight. $$$. So I crammed in 13 rounds each time. I did notice a different drop to this ammo, not sure if it was the wind or a more "cowboy action match" type powder load, as these guys advertise cowboy loads on their website. So maybe not quite as powerful as some others. It still shot ok once I got on to it and sent wood splinters flying which always puts a smile on my face.
It fed great, no issues at all. Very smooth, but my action is like butter on my rifle now anyway; nicely broke in.
50 yds, off hand standing and iron factory sights as you all know. I'd stake my life on this ammo any day. Between this and the Winchester, it gets the job done. At the end of this month, I'll be in Calgary to buy some more Black Hills 45 Colt. Oh by the way, I love this rifle.

As for us, we sold off our Marlin 1894 in 45 Colt because that darn factory 45 Colt ammo is so expensive. You would think with the popularity of 45 Colt in cowboy shooting it would be more affordable, but just ain't so. Got to the point for us where we avoided taking the Marlin to the range because it was too expensive to shoot. Just didn't make any sense, then, to keep the rifle. I hope it doesn't work out that way for you. Heck, I'd take up a collection for you to buy ammo if it did.

I hear ya. I may have to reload one day. But for now I am building my stockpile of ammo. If I shoot 1 box I try to buy 2 to replace inventory. Thanks for the kind words as well. I do really enjoy my rifle!

That is some find shooting ....... When I did combat type matches for over 20 years and cowboy matches for 18 years and shot a average over 1000 rds a month . If I didn't reload and cast my own bullets I could not afford to shoot or the gas to drive to matches and pay entree fees or money to stay in motel . The other advantage is I can custom make the ammo to the type match I'm shooting and my ammo is normally is much more accurate then factory stuff you can buy .
