I got to shoot a buddy's 1939 Winchester 94 this morning. What a beauty that rifle is. He has a Williams peep sight on it, and it's got a sweet trigger, too. I took aim at a smallish steel swinger at 100 yards and hit it on the first try.

When I handed the rifle back to my friend, he spied a couple of broken clay pidgeons on the 100 yard berm and made quick work of the (heck, I can't always do that with a scoped rifle).

Marlin fans have been in mourning since Remington took over (and yes, Remimgton has made some god-awful Marlins). But at least "real" Marlins lasted until 2009. For Winchester fans, the world ended in 1964. But man, oh man, those pre-64 Win 94's are some beauties.

Amazing shooting to hit those at 100 yds, ditto.

To be fair, if the quality of the gun IS ALL you're interested in, everything I've heard indicates the quality of the Japanese Winchesters are very good.

But yeah, there's something about "Mitsubishi brand Apple Pies" that is a little unsettling.

Excellent! I have a pre-1910 Winchester 94 in my shop right now. It's chambered for 38-55. It's a real classy rifle with wear and character. I'm cleaning up some damaged areas for a friend. He wanted it refinished and modernized, but I talked him out of that. Love a classic rifle...

38-55 is just one of my favorite calibers. I have had a couple of older ones and I let a friend talk me out of one I wish I would have kept. He then got out of guns and sold all of them. Al

The Winchester Miroku made Model 94s are excellent quality guns, as are their 92s and so on. I can live with the Japanese construction, but the tang safety on these models is a deal breaker for me. Their 1866 and 1873 reproductions, though, don't have the safety, but good luck getting one. Very hard to get, not to mention very expensive.

I bought an old 94 made in 1917 (if I remember right) and it was covered in varnish and all the oil had collected so much dust it was like baked on mud and none of the parts would move. It was sold as a parts only firearm but after cleaning it by pouring hot water over it all the junk came off and it turned out that the rifle was hardly shot at all but looked like it had ridden in the back window of a Model T truck for the last hundred years. So while the outside was beat the inside was perfect.

Modernize a pre-1910 Winchester 94?......hopefully he will someday appreciate the fact that you talked him out of it, but the fact that he wanted to do it makes me wonder if he will.
