Long Ranger 308 Report

Post by Fri » Thu Mar 09, 2017 4:30 am

Took my Long Ranger in 308 out to the range today. This is my first hunting type rifle, so this is a whole new ballgame for me. I was just shooting off of a bench with a bag on the forend. It took me about 8 shots to get the scope dialed in. The target was at 100 yards. I'm running a Nikon P308 4-12x40 scope on the rifle. I was shooting PPU Match 168gr HPBTs. Wind was from my right to back right at about 10 miles an hour.

After sighting in on the center target, the first group i shot was on the top left. Pulled a shot to the right.

The second group was on the top right target.

I want to shoot it off of an actual rest, but I don't have one. Hope to borrow one in the future. All in all, I was pretty happy with how things went my first time out with this rifle. I have another Long Ranger in 223, but did not have the time available to shoot that one. There will be another report from me on the 223, hopefully in the near future.

Thanks for the report, Chris. I'd say both you and the rifle shot very well. I'd be very pleased with those results. I've been thinking about one of those in a 223, so would be very interested in a range report on your 223 when you get time.

I have seen one for sale on GB and they have awesome wood on them. I really like the 308 round. Im tempted to buy one because of it. I also really like 243 and have one that is a tack driver. Al

I'm tempted as well. Would love a setup that reaches out to 300+ yards accurately.

Good shooting, Fri

Those groups will get smaller the more you shoot.

Looks to be a sub moa rifle after a little work

Just thought I would let you guys know that Hickok45 just did a You Tube on the Long Ranger in 308. He is usually pretty good with his reviews. I will be watching it tonight to get the low down from him. Al https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WXuWIYJqO20

I typically like Hickok's reviews but this one was odd. He was really hung up on the fact that it was a 'hunting rifle' and not really a traditional lever gun. He almost seemed uninterested in shooting and reviewing it. In the past he has praised Henry's such as the original but he really wasn't very complimentary today.

JCN,

It is pretty obvious that he has no real interest in the gun. How many times did he say, "for what it is" ?

I'm sure he got a lot of requests from his fans, and that's why he did it.

For one thing, he doesn't like scopes. At 200yds, he seems to shoot a S&W M29 with less effort than a M700 with a scope.

Also the internet, and particularly YouTube can be so critical, and he realizes that these guns with a rest can shoot FAR more accurately than he's demonstrating.

Bottom line, he should have spent about 10 min on this gun, not 19................

I watched the Hickok video and was disappointed that he didn't shoot it as a long range rifle. I have seen him shoot other rifles using the targets set up at I think 300 yards.
He rarely shoots anything with a scope so that may be what bothered him most about it. I think if he gets one with the iron sights he would shoot it more.

I agree with you guys. He seemed real bored to do this review and I would have also thought he would have used his longer range. I came away dissappointed. Al

If you're going to do a review of a firearm named the Long Ranger why do it on a pistol range?

Great report. I'm all set to sight in my new .308LR this weekend and will follow up with some pictures (hopefully some good ones, in a photographer on the side) and a detailed report. I can shoot sub MOA groups with my savage mark II G .22 from a bipod, so really interested to see what this gal will do at 100yds resting on bags. I have a shooting rest but I'm not sure it's built to handle a .308. It's a plastic one, and more designed for .22's.
