Single Six and Colibri, another try

I haven't been able to abandon shooting my Single Sixes with Colibri, despite the handicap of the Colibri ammo. It's just that shooting Single Sixes is such a huge part of who and what I am as a revolver shooter. Would Annie Oakley stop shooting because of inferior ammo in her day? No way. The ammo in her day probably wasn't much better than the Colibri.

Besides, part of me doesn't care about the less than stellar accuracy of the Aguila Colibri ammo as long as I am still shooting one of my Single Sixes. Funny that I really don't care about shooting my other revolvers with the Colibri (and I do have some thoroughbred target revolvers). Guess that says a lot about how I feel about Ruger Single Sixes.

Part of me always cares about accuracy, though. That's me, too. Today I figured to give the Colibri another try in one of my Single Sixes, but instead of 20 yards, I moved up to 16 yards and instead of a 3" bull, I used a 6" bull. That way I might be able to hold on top of the bull and still keep most of my shots in the black.

Today I used one of my Old Model Single Sixes with the 5 1/2" barrel and fixed sights. That barrel length has always been my favorite for balance on a single action and this Single Six is no exception. It just feels right. I also love fixed sights when a gun shoots close to where it's aimed and this one does.

Have I mentioned that I really hate shooting revolvers from a rest, especially single actions? Doesn't feel right. Takes all the fun out of it for me. When I use a rest, I will always say so. Otherwise, no rest, though now that I'm an old granny, I do sit down while target shooting these days. No rest, though.

Still below par for what an old Single Six and this old granny can do, but, hey, holding at the top edge of the bull kept them almost all in the black.

Most important of all, it was with a Single Six.

My son ran a magazine full through his 9422 rifle.......He was rolling tennis balls all over my range at 30 to 35 feet.....And sounded like a Cat sneeze.

That would be fun, too. I really like my 9422.

Back in the 1990s, I got a box of the .22 CB long cartridges. I don't remember the manufacturer, maybe CCI, but maybe Remington. It was a something like a 29 grain bullet at about 700 fps. They were amazingly quiet. The magazine ads showed the cartridges next to a piece of popped popcorn, I remember that.
I shot ten rounds from my Smith 41, and at 25 yards, they grouped similarly to the CCI SV I used for Bullseye, and a similar point of impact, but they did not cycle the action. Actually wouldn't even extract, I had to do that manually after every shot. They also shot well from a .22 rifle at 50 feet, and even quieter from the rifle.
Maybe look into those for a quiet and low powered option with the pistols.

That's more respectable for the colibri rounds. I may have to do something similar.

Glad you keep trying Joanie. I have found SV LR to be quiet enough and none of the neighbors tell me they hear anything. I hear others shooting all the time if I listen. My gongs and traps make more noise than the powder.

Thanks, folks. I do have neighbors that are sensitive to shooting, mostly because some of our other neighbors have been pretty reckless about shooting in the past.

I do shoot CBs out of the rifles and out of a rifle, CBs are quiet enough. Unfortunately, not out of a revolver, though. That's why I shoot the Colibri in the handguns.

The only semi-auto that can cycle the CBs is our old Remington 550-1 that my husband inherited from his dad. The 550-1 is amazing, but I can go through a box of CB Shorts in no time.

Should have mentioned that the Remington 550-1 is a rifle, made from the 40s to the early 70s. It's cousin was the more modern Remington 552, which also cycles Shorts, Longs and LRs.

550-1 made in 1949

^^^^^^^^

That’s a beefy stock on that Remington. Good looking rifle with a wonderful history.

The 550-1 was a full sized rifle for sure. The 552 that followed had an alloy receiver and was also a lot trimmer.
