Smith revolver, Kimber auto workout

Post by North Country Gal » Sat Nov 09, 2024 6:43 pm

Finally got out to put my S&W Model 63 22 LR Kit gun for a workout to sight it in with CCI Mini Mags and check for accuracy. I figure this little revolver will be a woods carry gun and loading it with HV ammo would make the most sense should I ever have to pull it for some rabid varmint.

This 2" version of the Model 63 did about what I expected it to do given its superb trigger in both SA and DA. The only negative was some sticky extraction, so the chambers might get some polishing. Plenty accurate, though. This was shooting in SA at a one inch dot.

In DA at 3" bull

Next up is a semi-auto I bought over the summer, just in case I ever need to carry for self-defense purposes. I was carrying a revolver, but I have always been more accurate with an autoloader and, of course, I get a lot more capacity with a modern autoloader, in this case 15 rounds instead of the 6 that I got with the old revolver.

Allow me to introduce my Kimber KDS9c 9mm auto.

This Kimber auto is basically a modernized 1911 updated to have a double stack mag and no grip safety, but otherwise the usual 1911 slide release and hammer safety. I've never liked the 1911 grip safety, so all the better. Given it's a fully modern carry gun, the trigger on this Kimber is awesome. It's designed for fast shooting. It pulls just under 4 pounds, no creep with a reset that is super fast and positive. And the accuracy is competition grade all the way. I just stick the front sight in the black and the Kimber does the rest. This KDS9c really is one of the easiest to shoot pistols I've ever shot.

I'm a pretty fair shot using a DA revolver, but not this good and not this fast. It's why I switched to this Kimber.

Hope the muggers give you a wide berth.

A couple of nice handguns and very nice shooting. I especially like the results with the model 63.

Critters big and small beware. The lady can shoot you dead and do it with a pretty handgun.

Nice shooting with both guns. That Kimber group is pretty impressive.

I’m going to try standard velocity in my 63 next time out to see if the sticky extraction improves. But for your use that wouldn’t be practical as yours is a woods carry.

Thanks, guys.

Loved the Ghostbusters. :)

The extraction wasn't quite as bad with CCI SV, but I shot the SV after shooting the HV stuff, so it might have been better with clean chambers. The 63 won't be a range gun, anyway. For range work, I'll just go with my 617.

Yeah, the Kimber has impressed me. Hard not to have confidence in it and that's a big part of choosing a carry gun, of course. What I also like is that the Kimber is also a fun range gun, so practicing with it will be easy.

Thanks, forty. Means a lot. If I ever visit your Bullseye Saloon, though, I'll bring a lever gun or a single action. Don't think they had fancy autoloaders in those days.
