Shootin' My New H009BG

Got a new rifle a week or so ago, a brass framed octagon barrelled H009BG.
I shot it a coupla days ago to see how it did with the factory buckhorn sights/brass bead front. It shot around 6.5-7" high with the sight ramp bottomed. All of these are some factory ammo I had layin' around; some are Winchester 150 grainers, and some are Hornady LeveRevolution 160s. I think the gun has some potential to be fairly accurate, probably with someone else shootin' it, hee hee......

I did some "gunsmithing" last night. I put on the Ranger Point Precision peep sight I had for sale in the classifieds, and a .050" taller Tru-Glo front sight I had, and went back to the range this morning.

I think I'm good fer now (at 25 yards) with the RPP peeper and the Tru-Glo .530" tall front sight. After I get my glasses and/or eyes sorted, I'll try some handloads at 100, or maybe that LeveRevolution ammo by Hornady. My new rifle semed to like it a coupla days ago.

Today's 7-shot group, after some adjustments. The bottom hole is just *slightly* longer than the others. It's either a double shot hole, or a complete miss. Could go either way with me pullin' a trigger.......

Thanks, GFK.

Not to continually try to make excuses, I did see an opthamologist about my cataracts this afternoon. I'm hopeful getting my vision fixed will help my shooting somewhat, especially at longer yardages. The dr. seemed to understand my needs well; one of the first questions he had for me is "Do you shoot iron sights?". ;) The reason I mention this is because this new rifle certainly seems a bit more accurate than my H009G was with the same factory ammo. I wanna give it every chance possible to be accurate.

By my Williams spring-style trigger weight gage, the trigger breaks between 3.5 to 4 lbs.. I don't notice any creep, but not being a true "trigger connoiseur", it feels good to me when shooting. Puzzling to me is how much variation in the trigger pull weight I get twith the gage. My steel frame H009G has an RPP sear in it (no return spring), and the gage shows it to consistently break at 3 lbs. flat. I actually do have another RPP sear/return spring kit here I bought for this rifle, but haven't put it in because I wanna see if it kinda "wears in" a little. I guess as long as it feels good to me, I'll just keep shooting it as it is.

I like the sight picture with the RPP peep sight/Tru-Glo flourescent green combo. I hold this sight under the bullseye (6 o'clock hold) and at 25 yards, it seems to be easy to hold that consistently. After the eyes are fixed, I really wanna try 100 yard shooting, and some handloads to see if those might accidentally shoot better than the factory stuff. I just don't think it's a fair test of and to the ammo if I can't actually see somewhat clearly where I'm aiming, ya know????

That is good shootin’. When your eyes are better you’ll have more than one two shot holes.

Neutron, I can understand. Sight picture is important, so is trigger pull. Improving the sight picture on my H009 is the reason why I put a RPP peep sight on it. And, I am happy with the results at 100 yards. As for trigger pull, I have no idea what it is. It is lighter than my Marlin 336W. It feels pretty good. Yet, I would like for it to be a little lighter. I am hoping to wear it in. I figure that it will smooth out, as I shoot it. So, I just keep shooting it. Maybe, it will wear in before I left this earth?

Pretty sure that bottom hole in the seven shot group is a “same hole” hit. Nice shooting indeed!

Thanks, Fellas!!!

Well, again, it's ONLY at 25 yds.. Wish I could poke a group like at, say, 75 yards or so.

But anyway, I really believe this rifle will be a decent shooter. Seems to show some potential. :D
And then I won't have any excuses, hee hee.......

Looks like a very successful sight modification and great shooting!

Well, shoot! Sorta..... :?

I ran into a bit of a "situation" when I finally went somewhere that I could shoot 50 yards. I was hitting a 1"-2" inches low at 50 yds., well centered. So I adjusted the RPP peep up a couple of turns, pretty much to max upward adjustment. The next group came up as it should've, but moved over to the left around 2". :? :? With my particular RPP peep, when I move it up to max height, you can see the aperture move over to the the left somewhat, away from the windage adjustment screw. Now, I like RPP products, but no way to really "lock in" the windage doesn't seem all that repeatable to me. There's supposed to be some spring tension holding the windage up against it's adjustment screw, but on mine, when I adjust to max height, the spring allows the aperture to move left, away from the windage adjustment screw. You can get new springs from RPP that might fix it, but I figured I still need a taller front sight, and wanted something both more positive and adjustable. I really believe this is more of an issue with my rifle needing a taller front sight than anything RPP did.

So, I ordered an Alaskan peep sight and a .650" tall brass front sight from Skinner. I have one on my H009G as well as my H004. All 3 rifles now share the same sight picture. The Skinner windage and vertical adjustments are a more positive lockup, and both adjustments give more range of movement(s) than the RPP does. Skinner recommended the .650" front sight, and it works well so far, at 25 yds..

So far, I'm pretty happy with how this setup worked out, today. I was shooting from a free box of ammo my uncle gave me; some old Remington 150 grainers. Typically, I haven't had the best of luck with Remington factory loads in 3 different rifles. But these ones seemed to do okay for getting a rough sight-in job done. The first 2 shots I fired got covered up with stickers. They were well centered, about 3/4" apart, and around 3" low. I adjusted the peep up 1 & 1/2 turns, and shot one round. Good windage, and still a bit low. I adjusted the peep up another turn or two, and got this group:

This is pretty much where I like my shots to be. I hold the top of the post at 6 o'clock (the "Pumpkin on a fence post" hold) at the bottom of the orange target center, and that's reasonably close for now. Again, after I have some cataracts fixed, I'll shoot at 100 yards and see if I'm still a Happy Boy. Will also be trying some reloads soon, again at 25 yds. for now.

I think something else that helped more than I'd realized it would is the RPP sear I put in. It brought the pull weight down from 3.5-4 lbs. to a really repeatable 3 lbs., which helps groups a good bit as we know. I don't use the reduced power spring included with the RPP sear; have idea if or how much that might reduce pull.
