10/11/16_Range Report_SGC on target

Spent a pleasant afternoon at the MDC range, Parma Woods. Not very crowded yet, but before long the "scramble" to get hunting rifles sighted in will begin. Temp was in the low 70s, light wind, a mostly sunny day.

Really love to shoot my Henry Small Game Carbine (SGC). I shot off hand as I usually do, and set a little different goal today. I decided to shoot at a shorter range to get a "picture" on how accurate my rifle is sighted in. At least I believed this could be seen, and my targets looks like it is so. I've marked the targets, which were mounted at 15 yards, and one target was set at 25 yards.

I shot off hand as I usually do.

Ammo used at 15 yards was Rem 40gr Golden Bullet HV, 40gr PLRN (60 rounds).
Ammo used at 25 yards was Browning Performance Rimfire (BPR) 40gr RN (30 rounds).

My POIs were good today. Total result was 86/90 rounds in target. The very few fliers today were in cardboard; no rounds in the woods!! Here are the pics...

My first set of targets are the standard MDC sight-in target. Two 8" circles; two 3" circles.
The first 10 shots I made today are in the left larger one ---> As the duck group says, "Happy, Happy, Happy."

My second set is homemade potpourri splash targets. From left to right, 6"; 8"; 3"
Another good group of 10 in the left side 6" target! Still happy!!

This 8" splash target has had it --- am pitching and will not use again!
But yes, there are really 30/30 rounds all in the black or orange, and shot at 25 yards.

This last blank target has a little story behind it. I mounted it 25 yards for my last rounds of the day. As everyone was returning off the range to their booths, the Range Officers called out my number over the loud speaker. I was duly instructed that we are not allowed to shoot at any type of head or silhouette target. I didn't know that reg. I've never mounted a silhouette at an MDC range before. This one I had shot at an indoor range with my revolver, and the yellow color is really easy for my elder eyes to see the POIs. OK, end of the story. The ROs held on to the cease fire while I humbly scooted out to my target and brought back the yellow silhouette. Learned something new today. A couple of other fellows didn't know that reg either. Guess I'll save this yellow target for my next time out at my friend's range.

This made it kind of an interesting ending to my fun day at the range. Had a great time outdoors this afternoon!

The SGC was designed for offhand so I bet it felt good. I bench shoot mine just to zero them and then go offhand. You did great for offhand. I was going to the range today but it was closed for LEO training. Might just go tomorrow after my mid-week hike.

The SGC is one of those guns I have really liked since their first introduction. I still don't have one and still would like to one day buy one. I have so many interests and one job to pay for them!! lol On the subject of your silhouette target, I have heard of that before. In the N-SSA events no silhouettes may be used. For team events we shoot all breakable targets such as clay pigeons, ceramic tile and clay pots. Oh...by the way great off hand shooting PT7!! That is when the Henry lever 22's really excel. They almost become an extension of our bodies with much practice.

The SGC is one of those guns I have really liked since their first introduction. I still don't have one and still would like to one day buy one. I have so many interests and one job to pay for them!! lol On the subject of your silhouette target, I have heard of that before. In the N-SSA events no silhouettes may be used. Thanks! Yes, the SGC is nothing but a pleasure to shoot. I noticed also that SH regularly says the very same thing.
During my range shooting today, I never even thought about the lever-action. It just flowed so smoothly, and without a single glitch in 90 swings!

If you are looking to get your next Henry 22, I'd inch a Henry SGC higher up on your list of "many interests," jstraw. It will be well worth it.

Yes I do say the same thing PT7. I have four SGC's and one Frontier. The carbine has a much better offhand balance to it. I removed the peep'ed receiver cover on two, scoped one with a plain cover and put a tang sight on the other. I put the peep'ed cover from the SGC on a Frontier and the other one on a Mare's Leg.

That is what I love about these Henrys -they are all modular and you can change receiver covers, buttstocks, lever loops and add aftermarket sights, slings and buttstock wraps. In another ten years the Henry rimfires will be like the Ruger 10/22 with more and more aftermarket products available.

Great targets! Very accurate results. I guess the yellow guy looks too much like Homer Simpson to shoot in the head.

I think you once also said "I like to take guns that are new, and make them look old." That's a good choice to create some interesting projects.

Partly because I have just a few gunsmith skills, I tend to keep my firearms, as much as possible, in stock condition. I also like the focus and looks of most stock components. That's a primary reason I got the SGC. It has the Skinner receiver-mounted rear sight, which is a plus for my elder eyes over the barrel-mounted peep I had on my Bronze Big Boy. I don't shoot well at all with the Henry buckhorns.

So the only adjust I made to my SGC was to replace the blued Skinner peep with the special order bronze peep Andy made for me. It looks cool, and dresses up my Henry nicely!

I do have a sight backup for the day my "elder eyes" get old! Before I sold my BBB, I pulled the Weaver 4.5V scope that I had mounted on that rifle. I liked using it, yet still prefer iron sights. So this "antique" scope will go on my SGC when the day comes that I also become an antique....at least, due to my eyes!

Yes I did say I like to take new Henrys and make them look old. Anyone that has been around lever action firearms for a few decades know they are new design but to a novice they think they are a hundred years old.
