I took a spinner and put it in a snow bank and fired three HV 22LR. Shooting up against the snow bank was a lot quieter than shooting across the field.

The first shot knocked the spinner over because it was only pushed down into the soft snow. A permanent range will have to wait for spring. Maybe I shouldn’t shoot rimfire at a pellet spinner.

You can get 1/4 inch thick AR 500 small targets which are great for air rifle and non Magnum centerfire up to .45 I have several of those type.

I use rimfire rated spinners all the time with pellets. As long as the spinners are flat and heaven't been deformed, never a ricochet with a pellet. On some old, beat up centerfire spinners with caved in surfaces, I have gotten ricochets with pellets, though. Of course, with your neighbors so far away, ricochets with pellets are probably not a big deal.

I like rimfire spinners for rimfire and pellet spinners for pellets. They just seem to do a better job. Eventually I’ll have two separate ranges setup and won’t combine them.

In the meantime I’ll plink when and where I can. When I shot across the snow the sound traveled a lot further than when the bullet impacted the snow immediately. I think I’ll experience the same thing when I’m shooting against a close berm compared to hitting a berm 100 yards away.

I’m thinking a 10 yard pellet range and a 25 and separate 100 yard rimfire range. At those ranges I can always shoot closer. I might be able to make the 25 yarder a 50 yarder but won’t know till spring.

I shoot steel BB’s at the pellet spinners and traps and do get ricochets.
The pellet range here will not have a wood backstop. The pellets will fall to the earth far short of leaving my property. I don’t want it to block my view of the country side.

You should use traps especially designed for BBs if you want to eliminate the danger of ricochets with BBs. Either that, or use the more expensive BBs that fragment on impact. All kidding aside, you really can shoot your eye out with steel BBs that ricochet. Impact resistant shooting glasses aren't a bad idea for this kind of shooting, either.

I always wear glasses. Not safety but just regular. In my Woodinville range I only shot at the soft targets. The metal spinners at the bottom caused far too many ricochets. I could use the metal pellet traps because I was shooting at cardboard. BB’s are most fun just plinking. Twenty dollars at the Goodwill and I have enough targets.

I have some clay BB’s but they aren’t much fun.
