Steel slammin' with .45-70 and 45 Colt....

Post by fortyshooter » Wed Feb 02, 2022 7:04 pm

Well got my new swinging plate setup down to the range this afternoon and added to it a swinging steel multi paddle target on the left side.
Brought along my Henry 45 Colt Carbine, the 1885 High Wall 45-70 heavy lead launcher and my Ruger Bisley Blackhawk .45 Colt.
Ammo for the 45 Colt was my 255 gr. MB bullets loaded with 9 gr. Unique and for .45-70 those 500 gr. lead torpedos that will find any weak spot on your target with a"mild" load of 40 gr. IMR 3031. Nothing mild with those things rocking the whole 4x4 stand and turning some of the steel into spinners...an 8 inch 3/8ths thick spinner!
Was good to catch a mild 50F day in February to shoot and have fun with another target idea. The setup survived many 45-70 and 45 Colt hits and will live on. My knuckles on my right hand are just a bit sore from getting slammed by that fancy shaped lever on the 1885 High Wall from recoil.

It was fun though! Sit back and watch what 500 gr. of mild mannered lead does  ! https://youtu.be/r_SAZ121CEw
There is a lull in the action while I load the last round that hits the far left target stand so must watch. That thing almost went in orbit!!

They will be okay and maybe better that they can move around a bit from the heavy stuff. Also I move around the targets a lot in that area.
The white plate setup in the far background is anchored in the ground though.

Yeah that load is at the start load for a 500 gr. cast bullet and it is plenty enough for most anything. I shot about 10 of those today and glad I have that pad on the end of the stock! Notice the chunks of bowling ball still laying around from the last .45-70 adventure!

Nice job Forty. That 45-70 really packs a wallop. My shoulder is hurting just watching that.
