Ruger Roundup Range Report

Yesterday I took three Rugers to the range for some ammo and powder tests. It was about 40 degrees and I was shooting on the outdoor handgun range. The visit started out pleasant but about halfway thru my time there the winds picked up. It didn’t affect my bullet flight as I was only shooting 10 yards and the wind was at my back. But as time worn in I kept getting colder and colder and while I got my testing done I didn’t sight in my MK IV at 25 yards as I had planned. Not Ranch Roper cold but cold enough for me to quit after the tests were complete.
First up was the MK IV 22-45. I shot five different 22lr loads all high velocity. All five shot great with only slight differences in the groups. I’m thinking this gun will shoot anything I throw at it but I stay away from the bulk stuff. I’m going to stick with the CCI Mini-Mags in the 38 gr hollowpoint.
Next up was the Wrangler I picked up last week. First shots with it. Same ammo, rest, shooter and weather and wow what a difference between the MK IV and the revolver. Mostly I think the difference at this short distance is the sights. The MK IV has very nice target sights and the Wrangles has the typical single action rear groove and thin blade front. The CCI Mini-Mag 40 gr solid point shot the best with the Federal American Eagle 38 gr HP a close second.
Lastly I shot the Single Seven doing a powder test with five different powders loaded in the mid-range for the Hornady 100 gr XTP. I was getting pretty cold by now with the wind blowing right on me. Blue Dot was the clear winner which was the last four shots I fired. Next I’ll do some ladder loading and find the velocity this revolver likes. Then I sight it in at 25 yards and let the fun begin. Sure like shooting the 32 H&R mags in it, very pleasant.
