New to me All Weather 357

Post by wolfman » Tue Nov 09, 2021 8:57 pm

Got this on a trade last week, in great shape except the barrel & chamber were really, really dirty. Rest of the rifle was very clean so I think it was ammo quality rather than quantity that got it there. A good soak with Hoppe's did the trick. Mostly carbon & a little copper, no sign of any lead. Replaced the factory sights with fiber optics, & headed to the range with some of the handloads that do so well with my brass single shot- 16.5 grains H110, magnum primer, Zero 158 grain jacketed soft points.

Double dose of good luck today. First, the newly installed sights were very much on paper, only needed a small elevation adjustment to get zero. Second, load development is over. First tube of 10, at 50 yards from a very solid rest:

Got there just in time, after that first magazine there was a growing line of people waiting to sight in their deer rifles (why in the world people wait until the week before opening day, I'll never understand). Anyway, gave up my seat at that point since I'm not much for bench shooting other than for zero & testing. Shot the bull with some of the folks in line, unsurprisingly, the main topic was how much they had paid for hunting ammo, and where they managed to find it.

Action is pretty nice, par for the course with a Henry. Trigger is crisp but heavy, nearly 7 lbs. Cut my teeth on nasty old milsurp triggers, no trigger snob here, but 7 is too much. That can be dealt with, especially knowing the rifle shoots more than good enough to be worth the effort.

Appreciate the replies gents.

Generally a fan of walnut & blued steel, but admit to kinda liking the looks of the all weather. And it's nice to have an option that'll shake off nasty weather, and won't make the angels cry if it gets a scratch :) .

Not sure yet, but might put a low power scope on this one. Doubt there is a scope/rings combo low enough to not call for a cheek riser of some sort. Riser options are out there, just have to find something I like.

Each Henry I get seems to be a little more precise than the last. Maybe their barrels are getting better, or might be that my handloading has improved.

Wolf, That was some good shooting there. No need to look for another load. As far as scope/ ring set, take a look at the one piece Talley integeral ring/base deal in the Henry store. A few of us here have that on our Henry BB's and it works very well. I didn't need any sort of riser. A good 1-3 or 1-4x scope is really all you'll need.

Edit: Item HTBBRBS, $49.99.

Thanks Rifletom!

I've seen that on the Henry store website, but wasn't sure how high it sat. If you're able to use it without adding a riser for cheek weld, that's good news. Scope would be pretty close to what you describe, low power variable or maybe even a fixed magnification of 4x or less.

The single shot will always wear it's factory irons & the X is set up with an RPP aperture, so a scoped option would cover all the bases. Guess I ought to get some good flip up lens caps as well to play nice with the all weather theme.

Great shooting. My Big Boy 357 Carbine is a great shooter as well, and the only change I made was to add Skinner sights. Back in VA we didn't have any shots long enough to need a scope. Here in OK we might, but the Ruger Ranch 223 will handle those with the scope I stuck on it. :D The only thing I'll be shooting are coyotes and feral dogs for the damage they do to Miss T's Chicken population and the way they upset the livestock.

Well, other than plinking on the range with the various guns... of course.
