The rifle & ammo: 1939 Savage 6a. CCI 40gr minimag plated rn.
The target: 1"Red bull @ approx 40yds from my back porch
The result: The high & right holes were unsupported off-hand. After settling down in prone, the last 5 shots were all in the red.
Conclusion: I'm better on my belly.

Gunny,
Did the Marines teach you to shoot "Center Hold" or "6 O'Clock Hold" ? ? ?

Neither. It was "Thataway maggot".

Seriously tho, it was 6 in boot, but that was in '63 with an M-1. Things have changed since then with the introduction of optics, different tactics, etc. so I don't know what they prescribe these days.
To be perfectly honest tho, I was a pretty good shot with a rifle years before I joined the Marines thanks to my father and a couple uncles.

I just noticed something. That big hole in the cardboard was from a previous session with the Henry .41mag.

When my son went thru basic training at Ft. Benning many years ago he had the same reaction. The range officer asked him where he learned to shoot as he did pretty well. I guess that makes sense as he was going thru training with many kids from big cities who never had the chance to get out and just plink.

In '62 I had never fired a weapon in my life, but I was able to sneak by shooting the M-1,(Center Hold) and later shot Expert with the M-16 (6 O'clock Hold) . . .

I meant the one to the right of the target. The one up top is a hang hole.

Expert shooting. I wouldn't be able to get back up. That's why off hand suits me now....knees aren't so good.
