Range Report: shooting beside the road

Coming down US6 between Price and Green River, UT I saw several cars pulled off the highway. It’s a common sight and not out of the ordinary until I saw one guy alone on a motorcycle and looked like he was shooting a pistol out into the barren.
I can’t confirm it as I witnessed it at 60 mph. But I can’t think of anything else he could have been doing. It got me thinking I should do the same thing. Only problem is it’s a high traffic highway.
I’ve shot beside the road on a couple of my trips down. Just not on the busy US6. Coming back I’m taking a slightly different route and know of a range between Lincoln and Capitan, NM.
It’s a slightly longer route. I should take it down and shoot too. Maybe Tuesday I’ll be making a range report where the guy shooting is me.

Be careful. Shooting from the road is illegal in some states. In my old home state of Nebraska, shooting from the road for hunting purposes was illegal and could land you a nasty fine. This "road hunting" was serious problem during pheasant season and caused a lot of ill will with landowners. Very big deal, since almost all land in Nebraska is private. Even target shooting fro a road was potentially illegal if you were shooting on to private property.
Of course, in states with a lot of public land, may be a different story. Do check before you start shooting.

It’s illegal to shoot across a road and I think you need to be off the right-of-way. The range further down the road after Capitan is just as close to the road and I’ve been there when LEO was shooting. I’ve been shooting (see my other thread) for an hour and only a dozen cars have gone by.

Another picnic table down the road a mile. This time I set up at a true 50 yards. The first five shots were all in a nice group especially the first three. The fourth and fifth started spreading and then the last five were all over the place. I almost missed paper on one.

I have four SGC’s and this is my favorite. Even more favorite than my Classics. One thing I don’t like is the Steven’s is European and the threads are close to SAE but not exact. What that means is you can put it on an SAE mount once but if you remove it and put it on another it will eventually strip the threads.
