It's almost a little hard to believe that the last range time I had with my Henry Small Game Carbine (SGC) was on June 28th!! This summer's heat and humidity has taken it's toll on outdoor shooting days...at least for me. But yesterday I was able to get to my friend's range around 9am and beat the 90-degree temp of the afternoon.

Since my last 6/28 Range Report, I had purchased a special order bronze receiver-mounted peep sight for my rifle. So today's purpose was simply to sight in the rifle again. Of course, after doing the paper target sight in, it was much fun to shoot at some black steel targets.

Rifle Sight and Ammo

I bought the SGC primarily to have a stock-installed receiver-mounted Skinner peep sight. No regrets at all on that decision; this peep sight is excellent. But after several years of enjoying a .357 Bronze Big Boy with so much good-looking bronze on it, I missed that cool look. So Andy at Skinner made this special order bronze peep for me, and the SGC sure looks great.
My SGC does well with several brands of .22LR ammo, but particularly "likes" Armscor 36gr High Velocity HP. I used this ammo to sight in today.

Sight in stumble

The upper 8" splash target was for sight in @ 27 yards using a bench rest.
The lower 3" splash target was my final "test" @ 27 yards shooting off hand. This was the first time windage was off for me after I installed a new Skinner peep. The other times I've set these peep sights, it's always been that I've needed to work with the elevation. I began by using the 8" target. My first shot is directly to the right of the square red bull, about 1-1/2" off. The two 3-round groups yet farther right are my two windage adjusts. It's always a 50-50 choice issue for me --- Duh, I was moving the sight adjustment in the wrong direction!!! So seven shots were needed to figure that goof out.

OK. Reversed direction on moving the sight; and the last more-centered 3-round group (including one round in the bull) is where I finally left the windage setting.

Off hand shooting

I always enjoy getting off the shooting bench and rifle rest. For my final "test," I stood and shot the 5-round group off hand, again @ 27 yards, at the small 3" target. Four POIs in target, and that one pesky outlier that always seems to show up. But the sight in was a very good one.

Black steel fun

I was fine with this peep's accuracy again today. I think Skinner does a great job with his rifle sight accessories. For the rest of the ammo I had with me, I spent time shooting off hand at a 10"x15" rectangle steel target, and a 6" round hanging steel target, both mounted at 50 yards.

Of course, I clanged the rectangle many more times than the round one -- but it was great to see the round one "swing in the sun" when I connected!!

Second range stop -- A round of shotgun trap

I had the entire day off, and this was my cooler morning shooting time with the SGC.
But I wasn't done! I then went to the KC Trap Range with my 20-gauge Benelli pump for an afternoon range time.
This was the second time I've shot a round of trap. I scored 9/25 for my first time out this summer, and 8/25 yesterday. I have quite a ways to go to improve, but this is a new shooting sport to me, with a new shotgun. I'm really enjoying the new challenge!

It was a different and good day for me getting to two outdoor ranges....just for fun.

Sounds like a great day! We have an outdoor range named KC here also. It's been to hot for me lately and both ranges open around noon . Indoor range has a big fan blowing hot air !!
I like that sight and have used Armscor ammo before. It worked good in my Marlin 60. You could ask some coons and groundhogs, but they ain't talking

Your note brought me to re-read my first paragraph where I wrote: "This summer's heat and humidity has taken it's toll on outdoor shooting days...at least for me." It had been over six weeks since I last took my SGC to the range...a long time for me. Outdoor shooting weather diminishes during the fall and winter, but this year the KCMO summer weather has been a huge factor keeping me from shooting. The extremely high heat indices we've had here, plus excessive humidity, have made it plain 'ole difficult to even walk to the mailbox and back!

Last Saturday was a tremendous change in weather, which allowed me to finally get outdoors again. The humidity really dropped! It was still quite warm, but a person could again breathe outdoors. It took me about an hour to get to my friend's range, and it was almost hard to believe that I didn't use the van's A/C. I drove with the windows open! Very nice morning last Saturday, and it was a most welcome change.

Maybe I should have posted this under "Our morning coffee and weather." But it fits with my Range Report and the challenges I've had just getting out to shoot this year. I hope you'll be able to get to the range again soon, RSb. Yes, it is where the firearms' fun is!!
