Range Report: Dec 1st

Today was day one of three planned range days. These are the rifles. Top to bottom -Henry SGC with a vintage C6 Weaver, a Henry pump with a brand spanking new Leupold 1.5-4x20 scope, and a Henry Classic with a Nikon P-Rimfire.

It didn’t start good as I had to drive nine miles back home to get something I forgot. Then I hit a detour further up the road on the second trip. I drove 82 miles for a 40 mile round trip.

All was good as there was still a lot of ground fog and I was in no hurry to get out of the van. Just as I got to the range the fog had lifted even though the range was still in the shade.

My goal today was to get all three sighted-in. This was a typical target with all three rifles. Nothing to write home about although good enough.

Tomorrow I’ll be trying to tighten the groups and maybe dial them in a click.

Any feel for which scope you like the best at this point? great that you are getting some reasonable shooting weather. We're in the dead of winter, here, though we don't have any snow cover, yet. Very unusual for us to start December without snow.

Nice rifle group to shoot with Gene! Like the look of the pumper with the scope too. What different brands of ammo are you going to shoot to work on the groups? Enjoy the shoot!

I thought I would have liked the Nikon for the seven power but the Pig-Plex from Leupold intrigued me the most. It is really similar to my tang and receiver peep and front globe peep sight picture especially with my favorite official 50 yard targets.

Here you can see I’m not on exact target. But the distance around the Pig-Plex is the same.

The actual field of view fills much of your vision. Trying to take a picture of it presented its own problems.

Nice rifle group to shoot with Gene! Like the look of the pumper with the scope too. What different brands of ammo are you going to shoot to work on the groups? Enjoy the shoot!

I was hoping to shoot CCI mini-mags in all three but might change to Norm Tac-22 if my groups don’t shrink.

At least there on paper for now. I will be real curious how the pump shoots against the other 2. My pump is really accurate

New lineup for tomorrow. The 1999 Classic from NY is now going to be fitted with original metal sights. Except the original front sight was actually plastic as is the tube holder and barrel band. I still have the originals in plastic 22 ammo boxes.

What I didn’t like was the vintage Weaver. It was totally useless in the cold which wasn’t all that cold. The scope is being retired and the SGC will be getting the Nikon. I liked the buttcovers and how they made getting to that sweet spot so much quicker. Since the old Classic is going stock I switched buttstocks with the pump.

I understand about the vintage scopes. I like them, too, for the tradition and nostalgia, but when it comes time to shoot, they just can't keep up with modern scopes. All my vintage scopes now sit in a box, waiting to go to a gun show to be traded or sold.

that echos my experience .... I used to have some vintage scopes (I'm so old that they weren't far from state of the art at the time ) but traded them off as better ones came along .... while I doubt I'd use them, I do wish I'd of kept some

Hmm, lost my post somewhere. Anyway, I like that 1.5-4 Leupold on the pump. Looks snazzy! Waiting on report #2.
