1860 Henry dry spell....over.

It was a nice day today, 42F and no wind at all. Range was a mess of wet gumbo, enough to lose your boots in. Spring is around the corner. It's been a couple of years I think since I shot my 1860 Henry rifle. Seems to still work ok!

45 Colt Reloads from March 2019
6.5 gn Universal
250 gn Lead flat nose
mixture of brass


50 yds, 8" gong, off hand....my off hand shooting is much improved due to shooting the black powder rifles with their 40" barrels. The Henry's 24" barrel feels like a mini-gun. I would have no concerns about it being a home defense weapon of choice.

100 yds off hand, grouping not as tight but still ringing the bell. This is with my ladder sight up but the slider at the bottom. For anyone thinking of getting one of these rifles, Uberti or HRA, take the time to learn the ladder sight. It can be challenging at first, especially in any kind of breeze. The temptation is to run the slider up a bit but you will shoot over the top at 100 yds most of the time. Slider up for 150+ yds. For me anyway.

Good shooting RR. That load seems to agree with that 1860. If you get in the mood to experiment you might try bumping up that load to 7.2 or 7.4 of Universal. That seems to be the sweet spot for both my Marlin 1894 and Winchester 94AE.

Just have to be careful with the toggle link guts on it. It’s not the most robust design. Plus my arthritic shoulder and rotator cuff injury don’t like a thumping. I have shot 7 grains in it. Works fine.
