Baby Goth Comes Home

Post by JEBar » Thu Jan 15, 2026 4:01 pm

back in the mid to late 1920's my grandfather (my mother's father) worked in a local lumber yard/building supply business .... the "Baby Goth" 68-18 cast iron toy/salesman sample stove was made by U.S. Stove Corp. located in South Pittsburg, Tennessee.... it was used by salesmen to market their full size "Gothic" line of wood burning kitchen stoves... its approximate dimensions are 18-1/2" wide, 12-1/2" deep, and 17-1/2" high (excl. stove pipe).... it is a beautifully detailed original antique cast iron stove.... my mother was born in 1925 and a few years later my grandfather built her a playhouse .... so far as I know its still standing .... he put the Baby Goth, shown below, in that playhouse .... decades later it ended up in one of mom's sister's basement .... between Thanksgiving and Christmas one of my (few) living first cousins, was cleaning out and called me to see if I wanted the stove .... as a boy I've fried bacon on that stove and as far as I know, I'm the only one who has actually cooked on it .... I can't help but wonder if the ashes seen in one picture were from frying that bacon .... yesterday we drove to Asheville and brought it home .... its in remarkably good shape and we are happy to have it ....

That’s an amazing treasure with such a rich history. Do you think you will fire it?

today I suspect that there could be some strong concerns with installing/burning this stove in a playhouse .... back when I fried bacon on it, I remember doing so in one of my grandmother's small cast iron frying pans .... here again, as I remember that pan covered most of the cooking surface

absolutely .... the only thing that concerns me is finding some sort chimney that can be attached to the stove .... the first picture shows the oval opening where a chimney has to be attached to the stove .... anyone who has ideas on doing that, please let me know

Wow! Totally cool and as a plus, historical. Yup, I'd fire that puppy up.

That is really cool. Always nice to have a touch of family history in the home.
You can tell a lot about the character of a man...
by the way he treats those who can do nothing for him.

I don't look back at the things I can no longer do, I just look forward to the things I still can.
