I just got my gun back after warranty service and there is a small scratch in the brass receiver and a slight ding in the bluing on the barrel. One of the reasons I fix my own motorcycles and fix my own guns but ... I can just touch up the barrel with a bluing pen but .. is there a way to buff out the small surface scratch on the brass without damaging it and making it look prepared. Its not deep .. guess I could just leave it alone but if there is a light buffing compound I would go for it.

What you need is a good story to go with that scratch and I think a grizzly should be part of it somehow...

Yikes..maybe better buff that scratch out.

You might try brasso. It contains an extremely fine abrasive that might help. It will take a lot of rubbing however. Normally used just for tarnish removal and polishing.

Unfortunately its more like a mosquito landed on it and was drunk so skidded into his landing .. Just doesnt sound as impactful as I would like!!

I may give some brasso a try. Having been in the military a thousand years ago .. me and brasso had a thing. These fingers have seen lots o brasso.

FWIW I recently tried Brasso on my BBB and it was like grease on glass. Barely did a thing.

I work with saxophones as I repair woodwinds. Minor scratches can be taken out with tripoli followed by white diamond then red rouge. I have a floor buffer that uses some fairly large buffing wheels. I know Dremel sells sets with small buffing wheels as well as polishing compound. I don't know if Henry sprays these with lacquer or not but imagine they do. You'd have to coat the buffed area with clear lacquer to keep it from turning a different patina than the rest of the receiver. I use Behlin or Mohawk clear lacquer spray in aerosol cans for touch up masking off areas to prevent overspray.

I thought i read somewhere here that there us not a coating. Still not sure. I have a block of green rouge and one of white and a dremel with buffing wheels but i am afraid that will make the "repair" to localized and actually look worse than the scratch. Someth8ng like brasso i could have used more broadly but if it doesnt work maybe flitz?

I looked into it and there is NOT a coating on the BBB receivers.

Because the receivers are gunmetal and not brass per se they are considerably harder and probably why the Brasso was ineffective.

Actually I was not entirely accurate about my experience with Brasso. Yes - it did not seem to 'cut' the surface of the receiver like it does on 'real' brass but it did very minimally brighten it - but there was virtually no 'abrasive' action to it at all.
I have slight surface 'scuff' on mine and the Brasso had no effect on it.

I did some research on this and discovered a post on another forum a guy said he contacted Henry and A.I. responded and said to use Peek Metal Polish. I had never heard of it before but I might give it a try next.

I have used it lots for other things (including the brass parts on my 1851 Navy pistol) and it works VERY well on REAL brass and I am hoping the light abrasiveness of the 'wadding' will work on the BBB.

Lots of detailed info in this thread titled <"Scratches?"> The original question posed was about a newly purchased Henry .44:

"...my 44 has a very small blemish or scuff on the side of the receiver close to the trigger area. Can this be buffed out, if so with what?

I recall that it was a helpful read to a number of Henry Folk.

There are several versions of Peek. The one at the Amazon link provided below should not be used on brass. Please read the 'Scratches' topic PT7 pointed to.

I would leave it alone. Find some Henry videos on the web that show slow motion ejection of spent cases. You'll notice that on Henry's centerfire rifles that most times when the case is ejected it pivots off the ejector and slaps into the outside of the receiver behind the eject port. My Henry brass .30-30 has a few rounds through it now and the side of the receiver is peppered in tiny 'flea tracks' from the cases bouncing off it.

A nice dull, aged patina will hide the scratch...
