Ruger Firearms Refinishing

Post by HenryFan » Thu May 07, 2026 9:18 am

Later today, I will buy back a Ruger MK II blue steel pistol from an old friend to whom I sold it almost seven years ago. I spoke to him yesterday and asked him if he ever shot the handgun and he said he had not since he bought it from me. He said it has not left his gun safe since he took it home in 2019. At one time, I owned numerous MK II hand guns but over the years, some have been sold and some have been traded for other treasures. I have a like-new blue steel MK II with a 4.75" barrel and the one I will buy back today is essentially the same handgun but with a 6" barrel. Both have fixed sights and black plastic grips. Standard, not target, MK II pistols. I bought the 4.75" barrel MK II new and as I recall now, the 6" barrel pistol was a gun show find, probably back in the late 2000's or in the early 2010's.

I haven't seen this handgun since I sold it in 2019 but as I recall, there was no rust or corrosion but the bluing was only acceptable. Back when I was heavy into MK II pistols (heavier than I should have been) I sent several MK II pistols to Ruger Customer Service for refinishing and was quite pleased with the results but I have not done so in years. I called Ruger Customer Service yesterday and the lady to whom I spoke said the Ruger does in fact still offer refinishing on MK II pistols.

Have any of the forum members returned a firearm to Ruger within the last couple of years or so for refinishing? Is the quality of the work still good?

Thanks in advance for comments.
