Bushnell Banner 3-9x40mm install

Post by undy » Sat Sep 21, 2024 1:40 pm

Well... My aging eyes didn't do well with my H010G 45-70s iron sights at the range so I decided to install a scope. I didn't want to spend a ton of $$ so I did a google search for the best scope under $100. On several sites the Bushnell Banner 3-9x40mm was at the top of the heap. Amazon had it for $91 so i purchased it. With 45-70 ammo being $1.50 a round I didn't want to burn a bunch of ammo sighting it in either. Further research led me to a 45Colt/45-70 laser bore sight, again on Amazon for 12 bucks. It was only effective at very low light conditions (see the laser). So... about 6:45 in the AM in early dawn I set up a 25 yard target in the side yard to start the process. It was easy-peasy to get it right on target. I then looked across the street at the side of a neighbor's house, about 75/80 yards away and it was still pretty much spot-on. In the near future I'll be heading to the range with a couple boxes of Hornady's jacketed flex tip 325gr ammo. More to follow...

BTW... the 45-70 lever action has been on bucket list for some years! I truly love this riffle. KUDOS to Henry for bringing it to market.

Glad you made it here. Thanks for the recommendation on the under 100 scope. I might need to go the same route soon. The .357 Henry steel carbine would benefit from some glass.

It's listed as a "dusk to dawn" scope. It really does well in low light conditions, bright sunlight too of course. That really aided in the laser bore sighting in the very early morn. IMO, you can't go wrong with it.

I've got more than a few Bushnell scopes on different firearms. Like other brands, they make a wide range of products, and have different lines that represent different levels of refinement in their manufacturing process. I can remember when they combined with Bausch and Lomb, and their decision was to bring everything under the Bushnell name, saying that reasearch showed that to be more associated with higher quality than Bausch and Lomb. I honestly didn't agree with that, and still don't understand it, but naming aside, they make a great line of optics. I have 7 or 8, maybe more, so that should be evidence that I think they're a good value. My .357 BBS currently wears a Bushnell Prime 1-4x32 scope, got it on a deal for $99, and I'm very happy with it.

I have a Banner 3-9 that was on my Knight MK-85 muzzleloader, but it wouldn't hold zero. Prior to that, it came off a 12 gauge slug gun that had the same problems with it. The owner gave it to me when I mounted his new scope in place of that one. It very well have been a rimfire scope that was mis-used on the shotgun in the first place. I still have it, and it may end up on something else in the future, who knows.

With as much recoil as your rifle generates, keep an eye on how well your rifle holds it's zero. We all have good and bad days at the range, and different ammo shoots to different places, but if you notice that suddenly you seem to not be able to group anymore, it's another possible realm of error.
