Clovis" 2026 Images
Kind of a slow day at Magnolia yesterday.
I guess this first image as a portent of things to come for the day.

It's a tern. It was hovering over the pond prior to making a dive for a fish.
Here's one of a tern after a successful dive.

The Pup and I went back to the zoo today. Had a good day. Took too many pictures. I came back with almost 2,000. I need to start shooting in single servo mode at the zoo. Got burned out on editing a little while ago. I will get the rest done tomorrow or the next day. Here's a couple.

There will be more gorilla pics tomorrow. I hit tilt on editing about an hour ago. Editing is not my favorite part of the process. It is, however, a necessary one. At least it is for the way I shoot.

Great images, CH. Looking forward to the rest of the "batch". Happily, it's not limited to 36 shots and processing time.

Re: Clovis" 2026 Images
Here's a few more.
I didn't think the extra 100mm of the new lens would make much difference. It's less noticeable with birds at a distance, but with larger subjects that are closer up, it really does get you in closer than my old lens. This image was not cropped at all. FYI, there was a fair amount of distance between me and this subject.
And here is another example of what Lightroom, and other modern editing software can do with just a few minutes of work. I shot this tiger with it's face obscured by bamboo just as an experiment. I then spent no more than 5 minutes editing it in Lightroom. Here is the before and after.

Great photos.
Deliberately including the bamboo in the image and using AI to remove it is interesting and even fascinating, but in my still forming opinion, it is no longer a photograph, though it simulates one.
It may never have been true that a photograph could be trusted as a faithful recording of an event (a picture is worth a thousand words), but not now. They can never be trusted again. Which is scary.

Re: Clovis" 2026 Images
As much as I love some of the things AI can do in editing images, I do lament the direction AI is pushing photography toward. I use it sparingly, mostly to remove small items that are distractions, but not an actual element of the original. At this point I can't just tell Lightroom to remove the bamboo covering the tiger's face. I have to select what I want removed, and often have to jump through hoops to get what I want.
There are lots of conversations about the ethics of using AI, making composite images etc. Everyone has a different line they are willing to draw and not cross. The bottom line is that there really isn't a straight from the camera image in digital photography. To be honest that was not really the case with film either. It was especially true with print film. I manipulated exposure and contrast, dodged and burned areas of the image, and cropped my film images in the darkroom. Not any different than using editing software today, other than the scale of what you are able to do.

Re: Clovis" 2026 Images
I had a darkroom when I was fifteen. Totally loved photography. I also worked at a university supporting faculty with media production, among other things, so I'm proficient with most of Adobe software and I have a bit of an understanding of the processes. I'd argue, though, that manipulations done with light on photographic paper are very different than AI. They normally didn't alter the image on the negative when it got to the paper, except in (important, but) minor ways. There are exceptions, of course.
Most of my digital manipulations are political, done for fun and stress relief, though I haven't made any in quite awhile. Regardless, they're not appropriate for this site and I've never posted any here.
However, ten years ago, we had a discussion here about Star Trek. I took a screenshot from an episode where the away team wore western six-guns. To be humorous, I added a Henry because I could...
I even put one in the hand of Moses.

Even videos with sound can not be trusted now. I've seen several videos with celebrities or respected doctors endorsing miracle cures that are completely faked with AI. Sounded just like the celebrities voices and audio matched their mouth movements.markiver54 wrote: ↑Wed Jan 07, 2026 12:12 pmIndeed it is. And they are wonderful, especially the Primates. You should win lots of awards this year. I hope you enter a few. Thanks.

We just lost our last lion,Roman, at the sanctuary that I volunteer at. He was the last of 6 rescues that we received from the Tiger King Ranch. Lions are so special as was Roman. When he spoke the whole sanctuary knew it. It has been a rough year for us,especially Last month. We lost three big cats besides Roman that month. Mostly due conditions brought on by old age.
