A couple of somewhat different hummingbird shots. The first one isn't quite sharp, but after a run through Topaz, I guess it's sharp enough for posting on the internet. I do like the pose. The second one is a different because I seldom get decent shots of them perched. They are so small that you have to be lucky to get one close enough for any real detail.

They are tiny little critters. They are 2.8 to 3.5 inches in length and have a wingspan 3.1 to 4.3 inches. They weigh 0.071 to 0.212 ounces. The ruby throated hummingbird is not the smallest hummingbird out there. I see one of them running off other hummingbirds from my backyard from time to time. I guess it thinks the feeder is theirs, and theirs alone.

Yes, we've noticed how territorial they seem to be. Always fascinating to watch.clovishound wrote: ↑Mon Aug 03, 2026 4:48 pmThey are tiny little critters. The smaller hummingbirds are likely bland, green lady ruby throats. I don't think we have another species on the East Coast (I could be wrong). I have a flock of them that occupy my front yard. They are very territorial, but ever so entertaining. The mating dance is a delight; called the Pendulum Dance. The bright red throated male flies in an arc, like a pendulum, back and forth, about fifty feet wide and about 20 feet off the ground. Very cool.clovishound wrote: ↑Mon Aug 03, 2026 4:48 pmThey are tiny little critters. They are 2.8 to 3.5 inches in length and have a wingspan 3.1 to 4.3 inches. They weigh 0.071 to 0.212 ounces. What I meant was there are smaller species of hummingbirds. There is one in Cuba that weighs less than a dime. Ruby throated are about the only hummers we have around here. The females are actually a little larger than the males. The two shots I posted are of a female.
