.22 WMR For Coyotes?

Any of you folks use a .22 WMR rifle for coyote killing?

I recently got a Savage Model 93 rifle in .22 Mag and plan to use it on coyotes later when the deer season ends in South Carolina.

Coyotes are a plague on my hunt property and I attribute the reduction on my deer harvest to coyotes.

I would think it would work at a reasonable distance, myself I just grab one of the 223's. I have an old 25-20 that I would love to poke a hole in a few with.
Haven't even seen one this season, but have a older fell a a viuple miles down that road that has been trapping for them the past couple years. So that could be part of it here.

Vaquero -

I think my shots would not be much further than 50 yards or so.

I could use an AR but I want to experience something different.

Not sure how effective a wmr would be on a coyote sized critter. Of course a head shot would do it.

Personal experience but very different is ground squirrels. When I would hit one with a 22 lr hp sometimes they would escape down the hole but left a blood trail so I knew they were hit. After switching to wmr hp I never had one escape back down the hole. The destructive power of the wmr was pretty amazing.

Maybe I could use my Henry Single Shot in .30-30 for a different experience. Sure do like that rifle.

Sure would make follow-up shots slow if there is more than one dog.

Use the .30-30. The .22 WMR is most likely going to just wound.

Some of the coyotes in rural Illinois can get pretty big. Personally, I would opt for my .243 (don't own a .223). I don't really think 22 mag is enough gun.

Maybe the .30-30 is a better choice. Even tho' I despise coyotes, they don't deserve a slow, painful death.

Thanks to those who responded.

Another vote for the 30-30. I dont own one but Im in on the 243 choice out of the guns that I own.

This is an old thread but my question is a continuation after a fashion.

I decided against the .22 WMR as a coyote round and settled on .223 Rem. since I have a couple of AR's and a Ruger Mini-14.

Back in the day when russian steel case ammo was readily available and inexpensive, I stocked up. I am down to only a couple of boxes of Wolf 62 gr. FMJ which I will use at the range but I have almost a full case of Wolf 62 gr. HP ammo. All steel case but even tho' it was inexpensive, I have never experienced a failure to fire with either the Wolf .223 Rem or the Wolf steel case 7.62X39 Soviet. Not particularly clean ammo but reliable. Oddly, the Wolf 7.63X39 ammo is incredibly accurate in my Ruger American Ranch rifle, more so than any quality brass case ammo. I don't use it during deer season (quality brass ammo only, due to concerns about expansion) but I use it when I try to rid food plots of feral hogs.

My question is this: Has any had experience with the Wolf HP ammo in the field in regards to expansion? I would like to use the russian HP ammo but I wonder if it will zip thru' a coyote without opening. Is there enough mass in a coyote body for expansion with any ammo even at 50 or so yards?

I hate to use my Federal brass case ammo for coyotes because I am so cheap.
