Squirrel Season 2022
Re: Squirrel Season 2022
Our season for Western Gray Squirrel: North Central Oregon Sept 15 to Oct 31; Rest of state Sept 1 to Nov 15th.
Illegal to hunt Douglas and other native pine squirrels and flying squirrels.
Year round open season on invasive species: California Gray Digger, Eastern Fox and Eastern Gray Squirrels (very destructive).
I too use a .410.

Re: Squirrel Season 2022
Got my second chair in place. Sit in it about 30 minutes this afternoon. Only saw one squirrel, but no good shot. Hard to get a good shot this time of year, even with the 410.

Found this picture from about this same time in October last season. Just happened to look down and see it. Way to close for comfort. Over 5’.

Re: Squirrel Season 2022
Yikes. I'd have used the .410 on that critter.
I've gone out for squirrels and rabbits with a .410 lately. I've seen none. I should find a nice place to sit.

Re: Squirrel Season 2022
Each year I rotate my squirrel stands around. I set up a chair at 3 places. I can’t walk like I used to so I need to be able to ride the UTV pretty close to stand. Always tell my wife which chair I’m going to because don’t always have cell service.

Re: Squirrel Season 2022
It's a shame you can't hunt in suburbs. I've got enough unwanted squirrels in my backyard to feed a family of 4. When my buddy are out in the woods during small game season, I see very few squirrels. I know, lots more predators out there than in my back yard.
I'm not seriously suggesting it, I understand the safety issues, even with air rifles.

I can certainly relate. I have the same situation. Matter of fact, I see three out in the yard as I type.clovishound wrote: ↑Tue Oct 25, 2022 9:43 amIt's a shame you can't hunt in suburbs. Re: Squirrel Season 2022
There's about a half dozen pecan trees scattered around the tree line behind my house. Just inside the tree line under some oaks are my stands. The years the pecans make, they are the two best places to sit. but this year not many pecans, so also not seeing many squirrels. So I will be moving them 2 chairs deeper in the woods. There's other good spots to setup, but have to walk a lot further to them. Its not so much I'm lazy, but I can't walk thru the woods like I used to could.

Re: Squirrel Season 2022
As I type this, I'm enjoying the last of a squirrel taken today. I cooked it in bacon fat with onions and boneless pork ribs. I used some of the fresh herbs still doing well in the raised bed, namely sage, rosemary and thyme. Once the meat was almost done, I added the herbs and chicken broth. I made a gravy and am having it over left over roasted vegetables from my garden.
I used my new to me .410 over under. Photos later.

Re: Squirrel Season 2022
Dave, I can almost smell and taste it from here. It's been a long time since I eat squirrel and gravy, and probably be even longer because wife ain't gonna let me bring one inside anymore. She never eat them but tolerated me eating them but I don't think she will now. Also, I haven't got anyone to give them to anymore. Nobody eats them. The last 2 seasons have been my best ever. I've also been using the .410 mostly.

Re: Squirrel Season 2022
Haven't found anyone that wants any squirrels, so I haven't been shooting any. I know they're pests, I've had to replace two over hangs because of their chewing, but I still have a hard time shooting them and just letting them lay where they fall.

Re: Squirrel Season 2022
I know how you feel. We have so many here it's like they're taking over. Several in sight every time I look out the window or go outside.

Re: Squirrel Season 2022
The word 'pest' is an understatement. Have to replace Christmas light strings 2-3 times each season because they get chewed up. I'm constantly making repairs to drip irrigation. I've spent $1000s between two vehicles replacing fuel lines and wiring harnesses. I shoot them but move them out of sight to places where the coyotes and birds of prey can do the clean up.
