In the woods

Post by biglever » Mon Aug 29, 2016 5:08 am

I have posted this question on other sites.
And it has done very well.
What's the weirdest thing that you have found
In the woods wile hunting, or just going for a walk.
That made you stop and wounder, how the heck
Did that get way out here.
One of the spots that I like to sit at on our old family farm , there is some old chunks of mettle, and most of the time I can tell or figure out what it was but these piece's have me stumped. Can't tell
What it was. I will go for a walk soon a get a pic.
And post it.
I found a weather balloon stuck in some brush
That came down and looked like it was there for a mite'e long time.

When we were younger, we once came across a rusted bicycle about five feet off the ground, embedded in a tree. The frame was sticking out both sides of the trunk, so it had to have been intentionally put through the tree, likely when it was just a sapling. We didn't have a camera and since we were not on an actual trail, we would never have found it again, even if we tried. We were amazed and bewildered.

I used to do a lot of river diving, looking for artifacts. Lots of cool old stuff. Lots of stuff that made you go hmmmm.

I've found a car, a Coke machine, dozens of mag wheels, dead deer, tons of boats.

I once saw a severed human foot at the edge of my visibility. I really didn't want to, but decided I had to go check it out. Turned out to be a very realistic plastic dog toy.

Weirdest thing I ever saw in the woods was an 18th century boiler just sitting in the woods near a stream. No other pieces parts around, just the boiler.

I once came across a Florida ghost town. It looked to be some nice lake front homes and maybe a business or two. A lovely place, why did they leave ?

There are many old cemeteries, some going back to the civil war. You always wonder about those that died so young. I guess that happened a lot back then.

Saw a downed plane, many old cars from the 40's/50's, remains of bridges where even the road is gone, old ranch equipment.

Up north were I use to hunt , I stumbled on to an old trail , that vehicle's used, now this is about 4-5
Miles away from the highway. I have tryed to fallow it , but it just disappeared. It's like it has no beginning or end. I can fallow it for maybe a quater mile. I looked it up on a topography map. And. It says it was an old military road or trail.

While hiking along a trail I came accross this old abandoned farm and all that was left was the silo and the crumbling walls and foundation of the barn and house. I wanted to get closer, but then I saw a sign that read, "Government Property No Tresspassing," with a fence separating it from the field. It stands on the edge of a vast Army base and I often wondered how long ago that people lived there and farmed there and when the house and barn was built.Image

The oddest thing I saw in the woods was when I was in about 10th grade. The woods/trails/hills behind parents house was a shortcut
to my friend's house also. I live next door now, but I was walking home from friend's and, close to home in a trail we sled road down, was
another classmate, on his back....well, enjoying himself a little TOO much !! I said WTH and he leaned up and grabbed his ankle
and said he sprained it... Yeah, OK  . He never looked me in the eye again after that

A MUCH better memory was, I used to work at a dealer and worked every Sat. and had Mon. off. I would go night fishing on my 19.5' boat
at Berlin Res., a large lake in several counties of eastern Oh. I was sitting out there on the Sun. before Mem. Day, I guess it was midnight.
All of a sudden, I think from the small marina, came across the lake, bagpipes playing Amazing Grace, loud as could be !!
Gave me goosebumps :D I was about a mile away and it sounded like it was next to me !!

I was walking down a trail in the Adirondacks with the kids. All of a sudden we came upon a set of rail road tracks. It was a small scale railroad a man had built. Following the tracks led us to the man, tending a rail car. Everything was less than half scale. The roadbed, the bridges, the rail and ties were just perfect. He had spent his life at this hobby. He just did not have the money to bring a locomotive up from South America where he had found one. Too bad. He had five or ten miles of track on his property. He pushed the cars around himself. Very cool, but very unusual to say the least where we were.
